What a welcome improvement !! Reminds me of photos I've seen of the 1954 U.S. Open.




So goodbye tree nursery. To this former Baltusrol caddy it is heartwarming to see such an artistic and thoughtful restoration that revives  A.W. Tillinghast's intention.

My guess is those little islands are most likely a fescue blend, and will be allowed to grow tall and wispy after they are fully established and deeply rooted. I fail to see how just having that be a large sea of sand would be an improvement.

This is a picture from the 1967 US Open program.  The redo seems to be historically accurate.  A tad green, but in 1967 it had been extremely dry leading to, by and large rough significantly below US Open standards of that time and hence low scores.


Mark - btw caddied at Baltusrol from about 1965-1968...

I haven't played there in many years.  Does this play as the Tillinghast Great Hazard?  If so, the grass islands are terrifically historical.  I agree that they will grow up and probably have a great look.

Work on the Upper begins when the Lower is finished. A member friend says they will have only one course open for play for three years in a row. Members are not thrilled about the prospect.

Not sure how it changed the play of the hole. It looks like they enlarged the middle bunker and took one bunker out and add some tall fescue to the edge of the bunker. They took out some trees as well. I like the looks.

I think the Lower is a good test of golf and demanding, regardless of what the pros have done to it in championships, but the Upper has claimed my heart. I am more interested to see what happens with that course.

I can remember John Daly hitting a 1 iron to hit the green in 2 on 17th in 1993 US Open (won by Janzen I think) it was the first time a pro had hit that green in 2 during a major at Baltusrol - correct me if I am wrong)

In fact Billy Farrell, the son of Baltusrol’s long time pro Johnny Farrell, did it in the 1967 U.S. Open.

From his obit. "On the tour, he was considered one of the "long hitters" and during the 1967 U.S. Open at Baltusrol, he hit the par 5, 17th green in two. During the 1993 U.S. Open at Baltustrol, John Daly was said to be the first to achieve this feat, but records proved that Billy did it in 1967 without the benefits of metal woods."

I love the look of #17 renovation - "Great Hazard" or Hell's 1/2 Acre is a Tilly signature design feature.  The fescue will be wisky grown in on the turf islands in the hazard, give it a year or two.
