In Rhode Island public golf is not strong.  Pinecrest though is an excellent 9 holer that no one has heard of.

On the private side Agawam Hunt.  Metacomet is getting the press because of Faxon's selfishness.  Agawam Hunt is 5 or so minutes away and for the time being accepting public tee times.  May not be quite as good architecturally, but I find it more enjoyable.  Tremendous variety of holes and as a non-member the club makes you feel welcome.  Played the other day and members let us through!  Played in 3 hours 15 minutes vs over 4.5 hours at Metacomet a few weeks ago.

Although not really in the Chicago area (about a 2.5 hour drive), I feel the TPC Deere Run is vastly underrated.  Really beautiful piece of land with a terrific collection of holes.

In the SF Bay Area, the Meadow Club in Marin County and Claremont in Oakland probably qualify. Both have had very well done restorations in the last 10-15 years.

Jeff,

Can you explain the connection between Linksoul and Goat Hill?

The gate at Agawam Hunt Club is almost directly across the street from the Sunshine Creamery. An afternoon time is required so you can go to Sunshine on the way in and the way out. They wrote the book on hot fudge distribution.

The Goat Hill in Oceanside was rescued by John Ashworth; Freddie wore his shirts for years. They were nicely baggy and even JakaB could wear them. Sadly his new line Link Soul is tighter than a GCAer asked to pitch in for food at a Kings Putter. The Goat Hill in So. Cal. is quite an interesting course with 1 par 5, several steeply sloped par 4s and quite a few knob to knob par 3s in the 200 yard range.

Thanks, I didn't know Ashworth and Linksoul were connected. I'll check some out if I ever make it to WP9.

WP9 is not underrated in the Orlando area, Mystic Dunes is.

I was a member at Four Streams outside DC for fifteen years. I does ok in the state rankings but I have always felt it doesn't get the notoriety it should. Smyers showed restraint in his bunkering and designed some really good greens. Besides that, it is just a great club. All individual memberships with a great caddie program and golf culture. I miss it like crazy since I moved away.

Well, I could've added  Athens, Ga in the Herschel era(where I went to school and worked at Athens CC-very under rated)
but you'd hate me more...
It gets better.
In Westchester I lived on the grounds of Sleepy Hollow(which was quite under rated at that time)

I'm not all that versed in Minneapolis Courses but I thought Minikahda was terrific. It got very little love in the MSP and the Ross rankings here. I know its got a great pedigree and can't be a hidden gem but it still seems underappreciated.

I hate to just reiterate Tommy’s post but I agree. 4 streams is the most underrated course in the mid Atlantic area.   Fun, challenging and ( at one time ) a quality membership.   In the dc area Columbia is good, congressional a drag and Chevy Chase could be so much better.

Concord having eliminated its worst two holes means they should be added to this list.

Omaha area:

River Wilds - (9 holes added by Eric Iverson)
Elmwood - short and steep
Arbor Links - a very solid Palmer course

In the Nashville area, it's mainly Golf Club of Tennessee.  I would throw Richland in there as well, but most people don't agree with me.  Harpeth Hills probably needs a little work before it can even make this list.

Now if we expanded the list to the rest of Tennessee, then the list could go on for a while...

I played Arbor Links last year and found it to be very good. It has a pretty tough finish. Palmer did a good job with the land he had.
