Jeff,

Thanks for posting this article. I've really enjoyed the two courses of Mike's that I've played, and this is a good reminder I need to see more of them.

I am on a solo trip to Florida and was able to play Mid Pines (much love here on GCA) with a friend, The Cradel at Pinehurst (very fun), Furman University Golf Course with Mike Whitaker (fantastic greens), and finally The Fields Golf Club by our friend Mike Young.

I had been trying to get here for some time but with a number of 2020 related issues, it just did not happen until yesterday. Mike designed the course in the late 80's and recently took over ownership with his son Ashley doing the day to day. After coming from the corporate machine of Pinehurst, it is pretty much the exact opposite of that in terms of vibe. With 2020 issues, the food and beverage are limited today, but it seems like a great place to hang and play golf. With a Kia factory a few miles away, it seems like it will be a great investment for Team Young.

The clubhouse sits at the top of the property and yes, it has a Shinnecock feel to it:

There are some very cool bouncy shots into the greens:

It is a great rolling terrain type of property:

While the majority of the holes feature some open vistas and wide fairways, The Fields GC has a number of intimate holes and corners to the property:

Who knew that Mike Young would also create some cozy "Mayhew-like Off-course Accoutrements" too:

Two longer (not long) green to tee walks, and a forced carry into #11 green were the only nitpicks I shared with Mike on the car ride after to Florida. He is working on #11 this winter. If Donald Ross had Pinehurst #2 to tinker with for many years, this will be Mike Young's #2 to "perfect".

Loved the course, the vibe (thanks Ashley and Mike), and especially loved the fun factor of playing there.

Happy Thanksgiving.

Those photos just put The Fields into my 2021 "Must Play" list.

Thanks for sharing, Mike Sweeney.   Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours.

I've played three MY courses, all which I'd play again if given the chance.  Entertaining; valued galore.  The man seems to practice what he preaches.  A cook who eats his own cooking?  Any news on Long Shadow (the course south of Athens which held a Dixie Cup, but ran into some financial issues)?

It is worth repeating: Mike Young is a very good golf course architect.

Bob - from his posts I always thought of Mike Y as ‘timeless’: the quintessential old pro, who’d never let himself become a victim of fashion. And sure enough, with Mike S’s photos of The Fields, I don’t see a golf course built in ‘the late ‘80s’ but one that could’ve been built today, or 70 years ago, or 50 years from now. Very good work is *always* very good work!
Best to you
Peter

The truly amazing thing in addition to all the features you posters picked up is the conditioning.

We played there in mid fall . Because they hardly irrigate the turf was brown and firm and fast yet very easy to pinch shots off of. Mike shared that their maintanence  budget was well under half a million and as a consequence rounds were very affordable; they may have netted more off beer sales actually as all day long the clubhouse was active with disparate groups of golfers. Just what a lot of us talk about on here AND truly good and fun design
"Golf is happiness. It's intoxication w/o the hangover; stimulation w/o the pills. It's price is high yet its rewards are richer. Some say its a boys pastime but it builds men. It cleanses the mind/rejuvenates the body. It is these things and many more for those of us who truly love it." M.Norman

Mike Young was a guest on the Fried Egg podcast released just a couple days ago, and the discussion is nothing short of phenomenal.

The tale of Lil' Boi needs to be a formal case study.

Also Mike, please please please post the picture of the Cypress Point Jeep-n-gang mower somewhere!

One of the best GCA podcasts I've heard. Really insightful listening to maintenance cost discussion.

The only negative - Mike is WAY funnier than he lets on in this discussion.

Seriously, really enjoyed listening to the podcast. Anyone whose ever spent some time with Mike can attest the man is as genuine as they come. Long Shadow was/is awesome, will definitely check out the Fields next time I'm close!

I too enjoyed my (two) days of play at The Fields back at the 2014 Dixie Cup...Mike was a gracious host and the course layout and set-up were top notch! Many of the comments listed above totally nail the vibe of the place, and Mike and Ashley have the turf conditions dialed in to a fantastic level.

I have the Fired Egg podcast queued up and ready to listen to over the next few days. I look forward to Mike's candid conversation and feedback.

One last thing...make sure to ask Mike about his push cart incident (during that 2014 Dixie Cup) on the downhill hole at the extreme Northern edge of the property (is that #3, Mike?). One of those classic GCA moments!!! ;-)
