From my mid-20's to my mid-40's I would have easily answered: "Not a single one."


Now, there are definitely a few, but I can't think of too many because my short game is generally good enough that if I'm within 20 yards of a green, I can still (usually) give myself a good look at par.


Let's put it this way: There are still none that I would "gladly" accept par on, but there are plenty that I would "grudgingly" accept par on. :-)

Thomas where is your list? Nothing is hard for you I bet. I'll limit to only those I have played.

• Torrey Pines South 12th - around 450 or so (not from the back) Plays into a stiff breeze to a well bunkered green.
• TOC The Road Hole - What can be said that already hasn't?
• Pebble Beach 8th hole - Just terrifying approach and typically blind for me.
• Royal County Down 9th hole - Long one and blind tee shot, the entire course is a blended nightmare for me but this one wakes me up more often than others in the middle of the night.
• Innwood GC (Joliet, Ill.) 2nd hole - short only about 330 dogleg left, but to an island green. Large trees surround your approach and need to be negotiated. Since you can rinse a couple approaches to a pretty small green, have great memories here.
• Trump National Los Angeles 9th hole - 470 slightly downhill with a huge bunker at the dogleg corner left. Large water hazard front and left of the green, need to come in with a draw. Also a three tiered green. When wind is in your face you realize you should have played a tee box up.

Just about any par-4 where I can’t get within approx 40 yds of the front edge in two shots and sometimes even closer than that.

My home course's opener is a 480 yard par 4. Only 470 from the white tees where most member play happens. The course record of 60 started with a 5, and I remind myself that every time I'm fortunate enough to make one of my own there.

Not counting myself as "excellent," but that's exactly how I played the hole the one and only time I played it in 2014. And I convered the up and down for a nice par. Loved it!

Into the wind, I know plenty of pros who'd have taken 5 at NSW's 15th and walked to 16 tee.
It's the single scariest tee shot I've seen - because if you miss the narrow fairway, most often it's back to the tee to try again - whether you lose the ball or find it unplayable down the left.

For we wild willys, any par 4. Hole difficulty doesn't matter much at all. If you are wild, two good shots get you par. More commonly at least one wild shot no matter the difficulty leaves 5 the best possible outcome.
