Hey Mr. Pretentious, irons are made of iron.

Steel would be more correct but titanium inserts and clubs such as Ping Eye 2 Beryllium Copper make classification more difficult.

Iron is a metal that occurs naturally on Earth, while  steel is a man-made alloy that's made by mixing carbon and iron together. I have always found it grating to have announcers (Miller, Faldo are notable for doing this) saying he's "hitting a 3 metal." I nearly always end up talking back to the television when I hear it. The descriptor "wood" or "iron" or even "hybrid" is enough information for the viewer. We don't need you to tell us that the woods are made of metal, especially since some of them are made of graphite or some other combination of materials. It's a damn wood, or an iron. . . :o

We are not talking about more correct! Mr. Pretentious wrote, "Your irons aren't made of iron". That is patently false! Modern woods aren't make of wood, but modern irons are made of iron. Mr. Pretentious suggestion that if you are going to call woods metals, then you need to call irons steels. A flawed suggestion. Perhaps we could call it a pretentious suggestion. ;)

At age 78. For now (Covid) walk and carry 22 degree hybrid, 6 "iron", 52 an 64 degree wedges and putter.  Rarely an issue with club selection.  None of these clubs are made of wood (in whole or part).  They are mostly or all made of a metal of some sort, I think, with non-metal shafts on the hybrid and 6 "iron".  The heat in piedmont N.C. may become a problem for walking soon -- as the Golfer-in-Chief would say, "We'll see what happens."
