Since The middle of March I have been keeping close to home. I cancelled three golf trips and don't have one on the horizon until late September. Yikes. I can hardly write that without wincing.
As we are now finding US courses open, what golf travel plans have you made?

Doing a road trip by car to Northern Michigan from Virginia over the July Fourth Week. I had an April Scotland trip cancelled but I've begun looking at airfares for late September/early October and as of now fares are really reasonable but I'm hesitant to pull the trigger. I'll be happy if we somehow have vaccines and treatments by year end and we can plan as normal for 2021.


As an aside, I love spectator sports and this is driving me crazy. It's going to be tough without football.

Ballyneal in September and Bluejack National at the end of October.  It's hard to say if those trips will actually happen though since everything is so fluid.


In terms of the long view, my group will be at Bandon in July of 2021.

Cancelled a trip to Scottsdale that was scheduled for the last weekend in May. 

We have a yearly trip with my wife's family to Myrtle Beach the last full week of July; 30 years now, and I play EVERY day. I'm 99% sure I'm not going to go even though it's only a three hour trip by car, but it involves a dozen families from multiple states in four adjacent houses.
Beyond that, I have planned nothing, and I think I'd be foolish to do so.  I truly believe that this is going to get worse, maybe MUCH worse before it gets better.  I don't see ANY numbers from around the country that look better than mediocre, and a lot that look like disaster looms in the fall.

Locally, I'm playing some tournaments, but I have promised myself that if I show up and can't either walk or ride alone, I'll eat the entry fee and go home.

Been using the pandemic to play lots of little 9 hole courses and other small courses around this area that I have never seen.  Continuing to work on the lifetime list (now at 1867 which I know is not quite Terry's level, but I'm trying). 


Haven't had any big golf trips yet, but hoping to get a little in on an OH/PA trip in a few weeks and I have one out to CO and maybe MT & ID I am putting together now for July.

I live in the Washington, DC area.


Cancelled a trip to LA in April and to Scotland over 4th of July.  Also cancelled a perennial May trip to NYC that always included one or more great Long Island clubs. [size=78%]  I’m signed up for the Midwest Mashie in September but not sure what will happen with that.[/size]


Thinking about doing Pinehurst summer trip and taking my day to Homestead and Greenbrier later in the year.

I’m curious for how many of you the decision to travel will come down to your comfort about the safety of flying during the pandemic, versus another issue? Earlier in the year I had assumed that flying would be the big dealbreaker for most, but I’ve talked to some people recently who have no problem flying and are concerned with various other safety risks.

No problem flying for me. I have a few times since February and other than the weirdly deserted airports, it’s not bothered me. It’s the destination government restrictions that are blocking my trips. Tough to plan a trip if your first 14 days have to be spent locked in an airport hotel. I’m hoping countries with the strict border controls adopt a testing protocol that allows those with negative tests in without quarantine along the lines of Iceland and Austria.

Roads are empty and gas is cheap.  I drove from DC to Ohio this past weekend to meet 7 guys from the Midwest.  We shook hands, played 72 holes of really fun RTJ golf, had some bourbon.  It was great to be back in America if only for a few days.

Bernie - I'm looking at this right now - where did you go in Ohio? Trying to get a group from NC / IL / NY together and we can all get to the southern OH relatively easy and this seems like a new target.

Went to Lawsonia and Sand Valley last week.
Drove up from Chicago.


Different story up in Cheeseland.
No masks at Lawsonia and the entire vibe had ZERO C-19 optics.


Sand Valley: Staff had masks and caddies said they couldn't touch your clubs....;p-)


No planes for now.


Heading to Leland, Mi in mid-July for 2 weeks. Doubtful on bringing clubs.

Still hopeful for BUDA but will wait and see. Have cancelled accommodations as I was a bit fearful that VRBO and the like might have solvency issues by Sept. should I wait to cancel. I expect that housing will not likely be an issue.
Currently have an August trip to NJ on the books. In the past I would have flown but will drive this year.

I cancelled a trip to Dornoch in April when my flights got cancelled.  I bought a very small place there in January and I’m considering a 5-7 week trip in August to September. Hat way I can go through the two weeks quarantine and still justify the trip. 


Until then, I’m playing the minis around here.

Was supposed to be in Ullapool today and driving up to Durness tomorrow. Needless to say I'm still in Pennsylvania. Looking at a run out to Western PA in July to play Sunnehanna, Latrobe, and probably a third course thrown in.


Finally going to make it down to Hayfields in MD next week. Looking forward to playing there again and getting some value out of that membership.


Later in the fall I would like to make it back down to Ballyhack. Last thought for travel would be a standing invite to Birmingham, Alabama to see a good friend who moved down there and is a member at Greystone.


The loss of the Scotland trip was a hit but since the reopening I've played a lot so it's not all bad.

I have got a trip planned to Jasper this year as well as a couple trips to around Alberta and Saskatchewan.


After playing a bunch of smaller courses this spring across the rolling prairie of Alberta. It's hard not to be reminded of some of the wonderful charming country golf that is found in the UK. The only major drawback is for every great hole that embraces the firm and fast nature of the ground, you find a island green or a par 4 with a green encircled by trees for no reason.

Is this confirmation that Sand Hills is open?  I can’t imagine being a local and seeing jets from both coasts flying in. The exact opposite of the images of outgoing missiles so common in the world ending movies of my youth.
