Scotty Chisholm was a prominent sportswriter back a century or so ago.  He began in NY, then moved to Los Angeles by 1920.  He started writing for the Los Angeles Evening Express.

I recently was fishing in the Newspapers.com pond, where others cast their line, and found this article from the September 24, 1925 issue:

That's some lake.....
In June I will be riding the first three stages of this year's Tour de France route for charity.  630km (394 miles) in three days, with 7800m (25,600 feet) of climbing for the William Wates Memorial Trust (https://rideleloop.org/the-charity/) which supports underprivileged young people.

Well, that pretty much puts to rest the rumor that Seth Raynor created a routing for Cypress Point prior to Mackenzie.
Great find, Joe!

Yes and no Mike.  When a news-writer calls the ocean a lake, makes one wonder what else was misrepresented or flat out wrong...

Kalen,

I suspect the headline was written by a copy editor.  The text makes clear it was a shot over the bay.

Interestingly, if memory serves, this could have been the shorter hole routing for 16 that Sven highlighted on that old map.

There's always one.

Joe - Nice find.  There is other evidence of Raynor's involvement, but this is the earliest mention I've seen in print of his name attached to the project.

Now see if you can find record of when Charles Cheney made his notes on the 1921 Map of the Monterrey Peninsula, including the mysterious routing of Cypress.

Mike:

The 180 yard number in the article is reminiscent of this description of the hole from the Nov. 1925 edition of Fairway Magazine.

Sven,

Yes, agreed.   Good connection between descriptions, thanks.

**EDIT** - In looking at the photo, would this be slightly right of where the green was eventually located?

Thanks, Kalen.   Perhaps it's just the angle or lack of bunkering that makes it look a smidge further left to me.
