Best Lunch in Golf?
« on: June 04, 2020, 10:55:08 AM »
What's the best lunch in golf? In particular between rounds?

NGLA?

Pine Valley?

Muirfield?

Waffle House on the way to the next course?

Curious what everyone's favorite lunch(es) & experiences have been.

Most of the top French clubs have brilliant food. Very different from the British carvery style though, there's usually a different plat du jour (dish of the day) each day. I remember having some quite wonderful red mullet at Fontainebleau and possibly the best golf club meal of my life at Les Aisses (I was eating with the owner, but we ordered off the normal menu).

Also fabulous food at The Scandinavian in Copenhagen.

It wasn't lunch, but the post round get together at MPCC with drinks and discussion was terrific!!  Best Long Island I've ever had.

I miss Sir Bob, he was such a great host!

At last years EIGCA AGM in Paris we were served a delicious buffet lunch at Golf St. Germain.

Very nice indeed!

The food at West Shore CC in Camp Hill, Pa is as good as anyplace. Good course as well. Hanging in the men's grill after a round and eating as if you're in a fine restaurant is well worth the day out.

Sounds like a pretty good list of places to play golf, even if they don’t invite me to lunch!

West Shore Golf in Douglas Michigan (NLE) had the best food in my memory, although my tastes back in the 70's were different than I have now.
They had a diner and malt shop which took up over half of the clubhouse. A huge porch maybe 80 x 16 ft looked down on the 9th, 10th and 18th fairways.  Somehow, their cheeseburgers and chocolate malts, eaten on the porch between 18's, watching other golfers, always seemed supernaturally good.  The fried onion nuggets were pretty awesome also!
I realize it may have been mostly the ambiance, but whenever I suggested the 90 minute ride to Douglas to my friends they would always exclaim how they had been craving the West Shore burgers.  I never had problems finding friends to fill out my foursome for the monthly trip to the West Shore of Lake Michigan.

The lunch buffet at Merion!  I picked a couple of truly beautiful brisket cheese steaks.  And for golf watching the 1st tee patio just can't be beat.

Come hither!  prove a happier plight,

Hard to top lunch at Muirfield. From the ladies serving, who cheerfully comment on the fare and the weather, to the mandatory club claret (or at least a pint or two) followed by the afternoon round, it is a memorable experience. On the other end of the spectrum, Ben's Porch at Sand Hills is magical.
So much golf to play, so little time....

Sitting at the table by the window at Muirfield is special.

The classic UK courses all seem to favour Roast meats and plain veg, like the members wish their mother cooked. Not really to my taste.  The best I've had are at Muirfield and RSG.    At the latter I was delighted to see Dover Sole as a main course option. As the chef handed it to me he added that I could return for more as many times as I liked, "or beef if I preferred".

The best food I've enjoyed at a golf club was the Renaissance Club which was a dining experience worth repeating.

The The R&A offered Tournedos Rossini. I've it had better-but no where as inexpensive.

I recently posted this from Granville in Normandy. Carbonara with Squid  rings!

I don't mind a carvery so long as the beef is properly rare. One doesn't get really good rib of beef that often...

Swinley Forest was pretty pretty sweet. Sheehy and I played our second 18 in almost the same amount of time we spent stopping for lunch. Wonderful staff, food, drink, setting, etc...

While I have had many wonderful golf lunch experiences, I think NGLA is tops in the US and Muirfield is tops Internationally.

For lunches dividing morning from afternoon rounds, I think my favorite thus far in my travels was at Tony G's in Norriton, PA, between rounds at LuLu and Jeffersonville last May. Excellent cheesesteak and I had a great chat with the proprietor, Frank Gallo, an avid golfer.

The crab cake at Hidden Creek was the best one I ever ate. And that is coming from a guy who spent 33 years in Annapolis, MD.

If you can remember what you ate at HCEG surely you haven’t had a long enough lunch or enough kümmel!

Needwood Golf Course

Battered french fries, cheeseburger and free refills of Dr. Pepper. A frozen Twix at the end, and head out into the blazing sun for a second 18. I have yet to taste better fries than those.
