Random exercise: eclectic bunkerless 18
« on: May 31, 2020, 07:31:00 PM »
The task is: your favorite/best/whatever #1-18 with the provision that all holes must be bunkerless. (In other words, the best bunkerless #1 you can think of, the best bunkerless #2, etc.). Have fun!

Matt -

I think this topic may have been done before. #14 at Royal Dornoch (Foxy) is a lock regardless.

My mistake (again)! I was thinking of John Mayhugh's thread of a couple of months back on the Eclectic Buda 18. #14 at Dornoch made that roster.

How about 18 in the western hemisphere?  14 at ANGC?

I'm sure it's been done before, but that doesn't mean it can't be done again. I see below Arble is proposing some holes he may not have seen when it was done last.

I see the Welsh Wizard Dai did it for a par 3 course at https://www.golfclubatlas.com/forum/index.php/topic,61777.msg1466951.html#msg1466951

I’m going to challenge 14 Dornoch with 14 County Louth.

Also worth considering is a par-3 not discussed on Dai’s thread: 13 at Royal Tarlair.

Is there a stand-out, world class hole at the new Sheep Ranch or are they all just different levels of spectacular?

I would suggest #17 at Winged Foot East.

Silloth 4
Silloth 7
Silloth 13

In my estimation 3 of the best holes on my favourite course. Examples of holes that show you don't need bunkers when you have great landforms.

15th at Harlech is locked on.
2nd at Huntercombe ('one of the best bunkerless holes in the world', to quote R Morrissett)
Agree warmly with 8 and 9 at Brancaster and 16 at Aberdovey and 13 at Silloth
Interestingly the Harlech 15th wasn't always bunkerless - in the rough to the left of the fairway at about 230 yards from the medal tee are the remains of three pots, but the drive into the prevailing wind is plenty difficult enough for most people without any extra sand. I think they disappeared around WW2, when the club shed at least a quarter of its then bunkers.

Wondering what the best course with the least amount of bunkers is?
Not no bunkers at all, just the best course with the least number of them.
For example Perranporth and Carne have a few but relative to other links courses not that many.

I think I did this in The Confidential Guide, once.

The one lock that hasn't been named (unless I missed it) is 11 at Ballybunion.

Ballybunion 6 (pretty sure it counts)
    Golspie 7
    The Island Club 7
    Woking 9
    Does SS Red 10 count?
    Primland 13
    Waterville 16 and 17
