Neat Hole

I played Amelia Island Plantation's Ocean Links course last fall.  I went with some friends to the World's Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party; that is, the annual Georgia-Florida football game in Jacksonville.

Amelia has a number of courses, and we played the least popular one.  I think Dye and Fazio have courses down there; but, we played the Bobby Weed layout.  (I think he did it.)

Mostly, I didn't care for the course; however, I really liked the 15th--a par 3 of 187 yards from the tips.  Because I didn't take many photos at Amelia, I decided to create a "Miscellaneous" section to share pictures of interesting holes (when the rest of the course probably didn't merit observation).

I just think this was a neat hole.

What are the great attributes to this hole?

I can take a guess but I would like to hear it from you?

Does this hole play hard and firm, it appears to be a lot of fun if that is the case.

It does play hard and firm.  The wind was coming from the ocean, so it played longer than its 187 yards.  I hit a low, streaking 2-iron; but, it drew into the slope and stayed above the hole well left.  The putt was slick and fast.  Chipping from the left is undesirable because of the downhill slope.  Short is not as difficult; but, may be semi-blind.  (See the third photo of the hole to illustrate the blindness.)

The naturalized area is effectively out-of-play with a reasonable shot; but, it's very attractive.  When you reach the green, you'll see native dunes grasses and natural dunes behind it.  The ocean view from the green is scenic and you can hear the surf.

That is a nice hole.  Interesting clump of rough though that takes some bailout and runup away from the front tees. Not sure I agree with that patch to penalize the puny hitters.  Nice to see a hole with this view without mounding behind it.

Carlyle,
Is there room for a pin on that back-right sliver of green, and how much room is there long between the green and the dunes?

If I recall correctly, the turf ends abruptly behind the green.  I'll have to look at the yardage book to verify whether back-right is a feasible pin location.

I think there's a lot more room in front of the green than there seems; however, it slopes somewhat dramatically, so it really requies a carry.  From the front tees, the hole is approximately 110 yards, so I think the short-knockers will be able to handle it.  It's 187 from the tips.  It's more like 150 for the middle tees.
