Leewood is the reason I feel in love with Golf architecture......as a 2-3 year old.


Family were members and the whole idea of hitting balls, going up and down hills was fascinating to me.


Note: A very famous baseball player was a member at Leewood. Guess who?

A compact Emmet course that is quite hilly. Some nice par threes on the front nine. Lots of elevation change and hanging lies...


Several stern par fours on the incoming side that play long. 10,16,and 18 are all very good! Emmet got a lot out of 99 acres here.

  It has some really nice greens and green sites.
Very hilly, relatively short and tight, and
often your best choice might be a 200 yard tee shot.
We used to sleigh ride there,
some of my oldest memories.


 I have heard numerous stories about Babe Ruth there.
 Some true.
One I believe true is this one,
 but forgive any mistakes as I have not checked the details in many years.
I think it was told by a local guy who caddied as a kid occasionally for Ruth.
It happened at the short, very steep, downhill par 3.
(I think the hole in this painting from 1948, but I think it’s actually #8.)
According to the caddy,
Ruth would sometimes challenge his guests or the other guys in his group
 that he could hit the green
by tossing his ball in the air and
 hitting it with a baseball swing.
Supposedly, he often won the bet.


(Having seen Rory, Tiger, lots of other modern guys do that swing, I can definitely believe it. )


PS We used to try to hit that green with a sled.
It is very steep.

This helps because he kept making me think that Rolling Green wasn’t very hilly by comparison !!!!

They have a cool event called The Bambino, open to all comers in the fall.
Good course. one of so many in the MET area overshadowed by the sheer amount and depth of courses in the MET area.

I can’t believe we had the same experience at Leewood. That’s where we went sleigh riding as little kids.


FYI, I am still very grateful you came up with the old map showing the golf course location in Pelham circa 1910.


Wow. When we met at the 2000 Irish Open, I had no idea what a small world it was.
