Once upon a time equipment manufacturers used to sponsor tournaments etc. Plus they seemed to sponsor more players back in time than they do these days.
Which begs the question, what exactly do the equipment manufacturers contribute to the game these days? They seem take a lot (£$) from the game, but what do they put back?

They sue the governing bodies to make sure they don't make rules that limits what they can make...  ;)

P.S.  I don't know if they owe anything per se to the game.  I'm guessing they have thier charities and such, but it is private business, should they contribute otherwise?

I'm on this boat. They're businesses - they don't "owe" anything to the game. They put out a product, and people buy it if they want it. Even if they sponsored events (or players), it was advertising to them, and they still do that.

TaylorMade and Adidas and some others still contribute heavily to junior golf. Local PGA sections still have deals with many major manufacturers via their local reps. Etc.

The game is much more than the PGA Tour.

They are sponsors of the local PGA Sections, which makes sense given where their bread is buttered.
Callaway Taylormade Titleist etc.
Also sponsor junior and college golf.

Just because I'm anti ever growing the scale of the golf ball and courses, doesn't mean I'm anti tech, innovation or equipment.(or companies)

Curious to know if any of the things mentioned above that they contribute too are tax deductible?

any "expense" is tax deductible
i.e. if they spend $10,000 sponsoring the MET PGA, that is an expense which reduces the bottom line, thus lowering taxes.

Equipment!

Manufacturers, like any corporation, is going to contribute something else if they believe it will add to their bottom line, at least in the long term.

I have no problem with that.  We vote with our money.  One can play this game with high quality equipment at a very reasonable cost by buying used.
