The new tee is one thing, only 5% of the players will even walk back there but the bunkers that Tom Fazio put in on the right side driving area have bugged me since they went in about 15 years ago. They look like they've been there forever and are beautifully built but they removed a strategic angle for the shorter hitter to get to the bottom of the hill. As stated they gave the super bomber more of an advantage than before on one of the most strategic tee shots, never a good thing.
I remember fore-caddying on the hole and watching the happy body language when you gave the player the safe sign on a ball hugging the tree line. For me that tee shot was really fun, knowing you could blow it pretty far right and use the slope to your advantage. Now the bunkers swallow it up and mandate a pitch out unless you get really lucky.
The reasons for changes have been stated but in my opinion are flawed. The new tee evolved as it has been theorized that Crump wanted a player to hit a longer shot into the green and designed it so you could bounce it on. Pretty sure TEP may have found some journal which reflected this, perhaps he may surface and help me out.
As Tom said designing for the tour pro or expert is a mistake often made in the last two decades as the ball has gone further, and has made architects and powers that be increasingly be concerned about the best players in decision making. Not the best idea for sure.
Perhaps the quirk of the bounce off the right side bothered someone who didn't think luck should enter into the equation of golf. As I see more fun in that than ever it makes me miss that option even more. I for one would love to see them rip out the bunkers on the right and bring the angle back! If they want to toughen it up let the rough grow a little more over there. It's so long from the back
tee it doesn't matter for any but the longest hitters, the 1% ers.
The turbo boost on the fourth hole at about 240 from the old tee put the bunkers beyond the fairway in play. Long and right. Often if you weren't on your game as a looper you would forget to suggest the three wood to a good player and you would hold your breath if he caught one flush ! So it was a great tee shot.
