He did at one point in the evening in what was one of the happiest moments of my life.

No, but I can get close on the first King Putter picture .  Apologies for misspellings and perhaps mixing rows.  I assume that Mike Benham took the picture because I can't find him in it.

Back from left:

Neal Meagher, gca who worked at Maderas, one of the host courses, and Gib Papazian's design partner.
Guy with red cup- ? might be Pete Lavallee's stunt man, but ??
Titleist hat- ?  nice young man whose name escapes me
John Kavanaugh- aka Barney; gca.com's chief provocateur and ethicist
John Van der Borght- USGA rules expert extraordinaire
Dick Daley- famous WI populist and questionable at the wheel on sand
David Moriarty- a champion of Rustic Canyon and detailed researcher who writes extremely well; master of debate
Pete Lavallee- gracious host, organizer and world traveler who easily plays to his handicap
Smiling guy behind Gib Papazian- ?, could it be Todd Eckenrode?
David Wigler- from MI, highly competitive with strong opinions of golf courses
Lou Duran- yours truly
David Schmidt- aka "Shivas"- scratch at stirring the pot, but with joy and a big smile; Div I golfer, Tour length, but to all points of the compass

2nd row from left:

Nuzzo!! designer of Wolf Point with a compelling life story- wish he would write a book, though he's still on his front nine
Guy with checkered shirt- can't remember the name
John Bernhardt- aka Tiger for his love of everything LSU; played a handful of world-class courses with JB- no matter how he played or felt, he always had a smile on his face, a true bon-vivant
Sir Bob Huntley- a friend to all who met him, man of wit and generosity; master conversationalist; knew everybody!
Gib Papazian- a scan of his brain would be of great interest; a Doak 10 if ever have the chance for a drink or a game- warning: look away while he swings
Craig Edgmand- from the Pacific NW transplanted to OK; keeps the little OSU's computer systems safe; doesn't play enough golf

Front row from left:

Ed Getka- not a sweeter, more generous man have I ever met; a real student of golf architecture who, regrettably, doesn't enjoy playing the ordinary
Tom Huckaby- aka "America's Guest", right next to Ed in the likability scale, but a fierce competitor whose "Oh Shucks" wears as thin as Sir Huntley's "pity".  I understood why he was Bob's favorite.
Sam ?- Pete Lavallee's friend and very good golfer.  I regret that we never got to play in subsequent years.
Jeff Stettner (with trademark hat on)- a young guy with very interesting and off-beat perspectives about golf and many other things.
Rich Goodale- a great thinker with a wry sense of humor who didn't suffer fools gladly, competitive golfer, outstanding family man.  Like with Bob Huntley, Tiger Bernhardt, and Bill McBride, he left the world way too early and his loss is greatly felt.
Tommy Naccarato- aka "The Emperor", a man of great passion for gca and furthering the understanding of the subject
Dan King- the eponymous founder, an early tech player and lifelong student of various things; by 2002, was already playing most of his golf between his ears in an easy chair.
Lynn Shackelford- requires no narrative; a swing and tempo to die for; father of famous golf author and TV personality Geoff

The KPI was, in my opinion, a seminal moment for this website.  The event helped build a positive personal regard for and among most of the participants and this carried on to the site over the years even when some of the discussions got heated.  I have had the great privilege of playing with many over the years at various courses here and abroad.  And if the tone is a bit melancholy, it is because of our times, the passing of some, and just the normal loss of contact over a long period of time.  Bill McBride once noted how the friendships facilitated through this site greatly enriched his life.  I encourage the young guys to jump in and attend some of these outings when things return to normal.

Nice Lou
Pete made a hell of a bunch of beers for us

The titleist hat guy: John Guntner(ish) is my estimate
Scott Clem and Don Mahaffey must have also been taking the picture

Lou,
Pete Lavallee's friend is Sam Saenz Jr.  Met him 4 years ago when Pete brought him along to a pre-Kings Putter closed event where I employed The King's Putter to middling effect.

Was Don there?  None of the guys with glasses look like Scott.  Maybe they were getting into Pete's private stash.  Pete is quite the bon-vivant, though, as I recall, he was in the early part of the learning curve with his craft beers.

I particularly enjoyed sitting around the table sampling the several types of fine single-malt and listening to Bob Huntley regale us with stories of his time in Northern Rhodesia (Zimbabwe now), Los Angeles and Riviera, and Carmel.  Bob crammed a couple of lifetimes in his 80+ years.

One of the important things from the KPI was that it showed it was safe and OK to travel long distances to meet a bunch of strangers to play golf and discuss golf courses in detail.  Though the KP may be in a permanent hiatus, it kicked-off a number of similar events that are well-attended.  I've been to the Dixie Cup and the Buda several times and they are great fun, as was the one Midwest Mashie in MN I attended.

In addition to the cast, I do think that one of the things that made it special was our time at Casa Pete and the great hospitality we enjoyed there.  As I recall, the first six hour round at Barona and the lack of hot water at the hotel in DT San Diego didn't even dampen the spirits (John V d B and I had opted for the cheapy near Barona Creek where we had plenty of hot water, a nice breakfast, and a leisurely drive to the course).

Should I do the KPII?  The story of our round at SFGC with Geoff and his caddie not getting along too well might be entertaining (or how we had to hold him back from bothering Mr. Tatum at lunch).  Or how while killing time at Pebble Beach when I was expecting an important call on a land deal I was brokering in Texas, two of my companions from the morning round at CPC hiding from view kept calling repeatedly and hanging up when I answered?  We did have fun, didn't we.

The guy between Huntley and Gib is Todd Eckenrode, the designer of Barona Creek. Wigler looks to be getting pretty friendly with Lou. Don Mahaffey visited his parents in Palm Springs and wasn't present. Pete Galea took the photo, where indeed is Scott Clem?  The fellow between JAKAB and JBV is Todds Australian partner whose name escapes me; I do remember he could pipe his Burner Driver with the rifle shaft though! The true mystery is the tall guy second from the left in the back row? Dan Grossman and Eric Shortz went out on the town that night so it’s not them? Good times indeed.

One of the last KP's held - it was at Chambers, Gold Mountain and the Home Course.  Was a blast:

Thanks to those posting these pics - they bring great joy in a difficult time.   Nonetheless, I still don't understand why Huntley was dressed as a caddy at KPIII.  This I know - no man ever brought that much dignity to a John Deere baseball cap.  If I recall correctly, he got it free with his purchase of a mower.

I also recall why I once wanted to be the Fortsonator when I grew up.

Thanks for the photo credit Pete.
I remember the King's Putter at Barona Creek well. The cast of characters will never be matched.
It was right after my hip replacement and I was only able to hit two shots. Both on a par 3.
The whereabouts of the first will never be known, the mulligan was somewhat better.
This after witnessing Gib's remarkable swing for a number of holes, looked like he was
"falling off a barstool putting on a sweater" - (George Peper?)
My greatest contribution was driving down the hill in a borrowed station wagon to get several cases of beer for the crew.
No alcohol was served on the reservation.
I really enjoyed Eckenrode's work at Barona, especially the bunkering, and Sandy Clark's "maintenance meld."
Pete was the ultimate host with great home-brew and food.

I also photographed the crew behind 18 green at Pasatiempo for KPII with a 1932 Deardorff 8x10. That's my shadow on the bottom holding the dark slide. It was the second day, after we played Pajaro with balata. I still have two dozen in sealed boxes.
