Pebble Restoration - Hochstein Design

This is making the rounds on social media, but thought it was worth sharing here:

I really enjoyed reading this, and think Brett did a really nice job of making proposed changes that are grounded in reality, while still being aspirational in nature. Some of the changes would be aesthetically, but others would impact on play.

Would love to hear others thoughts, but a very well written piece with loads of fantastic photos.

" I would also agree that Jack Nicklaus's moving of the par 3 5th hole down to the oceanside was a good one, though admittedly I never saw the original and if it had anything notable to it.  There is also no choice but to leave it anyway since the other land has been developed.

It is a shame the author never experienced the old 5th. It had one helluva green. Severely sloped from back to front and the right side was steeply sloped to the middle.

But the greatest aspect was how the route flowed from the back of 5 to the 6th teeing ground. The impact of seeing the view, as you came around the trees, was special, ala the walk along the river at Highlands Links, or the walk from 15 to 16 at Cypress.
This loss is the most devastating of all of the ill-conceived changes.

In 1998,  a year before the Am, approaches were all re-worked. Also, around that time 1999, the bunkers around the 7th were re-done, overnight.

The Nicklaus vs Watson edition of Shell's WWOG (on YouTube) circa 1995-96 has some footage of them playing the old 5th.

Tim,

Appreciate you reading and giving this some attention.  It was a fun exercise to go through and put together.

Adam,

Really making me wish I had seen old 5 now and the green you describe.  Will have to look up some footage as Matthew suggests.  I can certainly understand the point about the routing flow and getting that grand reveal at 6 tee.  That is a big part of the emotional component of golf and course routing that doesn't get talked about enough.  I'd say the two reasons for that are that there aren't as many good examples of such routing moments and that it is just more difficult for us humans to talk about such abstract, subjective things.  Numbers and distance are much easier to drum on about.
