Congratulations are in order to Criss for moving on!  Very well played!  I would like to blame my loss on rust, his home course advantage, the wind, strokes, anything really, but it boiled down to my lack of talent.  :)
I really appreciate Criss hosting me at Miami View, and enjoyed hearing about the origin, changes, and layout.  It has an interesting mix of short and long holes, with tons of movement in the land, small targets, and is quite unforgiving for those of us who are "less than straight" off the tee  :)  Course was in excellent condition, by the way.
Thanks again for letting us participate in this cool idea!

Evan Fleisher and I ventured outside Cleveland to Sugar Bush Golf Club in Garrettsville, OH. Not knowing anything about the course going into the day, I was pleasantly surprised by the solid routing over rolling terrain. The course was in fantastic shape and a great deal at $25 walking on a Sunday. The greens were running nicely and presented a good amount of tilt resulting in a fair number of 3 putts on the day.

As for the match, I got out to a 4 up lead thru 11 but Evan made some good swings and won the next 3 to make it interesting. I was lucky to win the next 2 holes and finish the match 3 and 2. I highly recommend the Harold Paddock design if you are in the Cleveland area and looking to change things up from Manakiki and Sleepy Hollow. Thanks to Evan for suggesting it and for an enjoyable day.

So glad George agreed to meet me out in the hinterlands of the Cleveland area for this fun and interesting course! The use of significantly rolling terrain and some super-canted greens made for a challenging and entertaining afternoon walk.  There are a bunch of unique holes out there and a detour from the "usual suspects" around the Cleveland area is well worth your efforts.

As for the match, George was (mostly) his steady self especially off the tee.  Me...not so much.  But I did get my act together early on the back nine and made a match of it, until George closed me out on the shortish par-4 risk/reward 16th with an incredible chip shot to a foot after nearly driving the green.

I wish George the best of luck as he continues on in the bracket...next up, Mr. Sturges!  Maybe I'll tag along as a marker?!?!?  Hmmm...  8)

With everything going on, I understand it may be difficult to complete the tournament this year.  If you know you will be unable to play your match, please either let me or your opponent know.  Hope everyone is well.

I was honored to play with Steve Salmen in the first round. Steve is a great example of what's so great about this community. In 2014, I wrote a post that was critical of The Old Course. Soon afterward, I was at a GCA outing at Beverly, and Steve made a point to find me to discuss our points of agreement and disagreement. We've been great friends ever since, and I always enjoy our conversations about golf, politics, and everything else (even when we disagree vehemently!).

Before we played, I told Steve that I was going to concede the match and drop out of the knockout. Given the global pandemic and my marital contract, I have agreed not to travel for matches. I hope Steve enjoys the next round, and I'll look forward to playing next year.

We played a match for fun today at Flossmoor, and I was fortunate to win 4&2. In Steve's defense, it was a non-neutral site (it's my home course), and he played without a full set of clubs (we walked and carried in extreme heat and humidity, so he brought a Sunday bag with only about 9 clubs). I played well, making 5 birdies (on 1, 8, 9, 14, and 16). Steve didn't bring his normal game, but he had some highlights. On 5, he was 230 yards out, in thick rough, on a steep downhill lie, and he hit a beautiful hybrid to 15 feet. And on 15, he made a 35-foot putt for bogey/net par (after hitting his second in the creek) to extend the match.

Topics of discussion included our shared affinity for Lawsonia and North Berwick, our disagreements on Yale and Kingsley, the easiest ways to make Flossmoor even better (remove the trees on the right side of 6 and expand the 5th green back to its original perimeter), and some controversial political views that we won't broadcast publicly.

Thank you, James, for organizing the knockout, and thank you, Steve, for a fun round.

Anthony, I'm not sure you get a big home course advantage over Steve at Flossmoor.  :)

Joe Melchiors hosted me yesterday at Chicago Highlands and took me down 2&1, so he moves on.  The course is in fantastic shape, and we had a lot of fun.  There are some polarizing holes there, but they're the type that I want to immediately play again.  It was maybe my third round of golf in Illinois since 2017, and the softer fairways on clay are not suited to the swing I've developed for the Kingsley fescue.  Highlands has a lot of really good holes that intimidate you if you haven't played there a lot.

I had a fantastic walk around Flossmoor yesterday with Anthony.  It was a privilege to watch the game played at his level and an even greater privilege to have him share is tremendous wisdom with me.  I keep up with current events and am lucky to have a friend that I can disagree with on many ideas.  It probably makes our friendship stronger, knowing we have mutual respect for each other and listen to what we say to each other.  That said, we probably agree on a lot more things than not.

I've probably played Flossmoor 200 times.  I was a member for four years.  Though it has been 11 years since I paid dues there, the golf course is exactly as I remembered it, and played the same, excellent.

Anthony, I will do my best to represent our side of the bracket.  I hope my driver, putter, and everything in between is a little more cooperative than yesterday.  As my friend Ian Lagowitz likes to say, I hit that hybrid on 5 with "everything in the cannon!"

One of the great things about this site is meeting other like-minded golfers and making new friends. As Brad Hill noted it took us 37 holes to complete our match. By now we have once again proved Harvey Penick right.

Why 37 holes you might wonder. Well it actually took 55 if you count the the fact I bailed on our first scheduled match in mid-May because it was going to be 50 degrees in a downpour. We had scheduled it so the winner of the Saturday Moore Wolter match would play Brad on Sunday but when the weather turned I decided not to play. Buck and Brad persevered however as two of the few who played that cold May Sunday.

Brad and I scheduled our rematch on Memorial Day which turned out to be the first hot and humid day of the season. I was coming off a three day 36 holes a day marathon hickory tournament with just one day in between. We battled all round only to end up in a tie after Brad gave me the 18th hole losing to my bogey. I was little heat exhausted and barely able to make it up the hill on Sand Valley's 18th. Brad helped push my cart for the last 75 yards or so. Instead of playing on Brad graciously agreed to a rematch.

We played a few weeks later on what turned out to be a perfect mid-June day for golf making up for that miserable day in May. It was battle with many holes won and lost with Brad leading by one many times but never able to extend it to two. I kept it close but never took the lead. It came down to 18 again and this time my birdie extended the match to the 19th hole. Unfortunately Brad ended up in pocket for the only time all day and I advanced while making a new golf friend.

Brad and I will be playing again soon when he comes back up the Sand Valley for the Wisconsin Par 3 Championship on the Sandbox. We just found out out yesterday we are paired together-what are the odds of that. In addition to at the par 3 we'll play a few friendly matches on SV and Mammoth. Thanks GCA.

Mr. Burrows and I are postponing our match. I've had a sciatic nerve injury come up that makes it basically impossible to play golf. We'll try again in a few weeks. If I'm still not fit at that time., I will forfeit to keep this thing rolling along.

George Freeman and I enjoyed a humid afternoon yesterday at Kankakee Elks.  After a birdie at 9, I found myself 3 up but George was saving his best golf for the back 9.  George was able to win the next 5 holes to go 2 up and finished me off with a downhill 5- footer on 18 to win 1 up.  Kankakee is likely one of the best values in all of golf, and I plan on making the hour drive to play many times in the future.

George is a good dude, and am looking forward to arranging a game again in the near future.  Good luck in the next round.

Thanks James.  I almost packed it in after 9!  Going from 1-up through four to 3-down after nine was demoralizing.  Fun match (straight up, no less!).  Looking forward to many more.

Thanks to John Mayhugh for meeting me at the new IU course. Pretty big improvement over the old venue. Close match all the way when John birdied 13 to go 1 up, I was able to dial up 4 straight ridiculous up and downs in a row to steal the match 2&1.

Buck it was pretty cool. Square greens. It always has good land movement. Definitely my favorite of the 4 Smyers courses I’ve played (Wolf Run, Heartland Crossing, and Kokopelli.) Fuzzy must have rubbed off some of the playability he usually has on his courses. It would be in my Indiana top ten which I could not have even pretended beforehand.

I hosted Brian at Urbana Country Club, a course he had not seen until yesterday.  The highlight of the day was spending about 20 minutes with P.B. Dye while he was working on the course.  He was very generous with his time and always willing to chat.  His stories and personality are always entertaining.

As for the golf, the course was wet for the first time in about a month and a half, and the greens held some water, but the rest of the course was still pretty firm and fast.  There was blood shed back and forth for the first 9 holes until our 10th hole where we both made par, with Brian barely missing a birdie to keep the streak alive.  Even after all that I was only 1 up.  The next hole Brian gave one away on the only hole where water really comes into play by hitting his tee ball into the water and I hit the green, with a sad three putt enough to go 2 up.  We tied the next two and arrived at the 18th hole (our 14th hole) and I blocked a drive right under some trees, punched into a bunker hole high and hit the shot of the day, putting me a couple inches from the hole to save my par.  Brian had a par putt from above the hole, a spot  you do not want to be and missed on the high side, putting me 3 up with 4 to go.  I proceed to make par on the next hole and closed out the match 4/3.  Due to the way we played the course, the one stroke I was supposed to get never materialized.

It was a great day for golf and it is always a pleasure to see and visit with Brian.  I think I picked the right time to play him as he had spent the last 3 weeks working on Jack's course getting it ready for the back to back tournaments.  We enjoyed a beverage on the patio afterward and loved hearing about all the great projects in Ohio continuing to make Ohio's golf bounty even greater.
