This sounds interesting.... can someone provide me details of this event?

Is it a year long event where different people host?   What is the format?

Is there even a spot if I wanted to do it?

Thanks!

Mike - it's a match play tournament open to residents of the midwest (or those willing to drive there) that will start whenever the weather allows and hopefully produces a winner by the end of the season.  I will make random pairings in about a month trying to minimize drive time for at least the first few rounds.  Participants are responsible for scheduling matches in a timely manner.

Sorry for the delay....took me awhile to figure out how to keep people somewhat close to home first few rounds.  If there are any issues let me know and I can try to adjust the bracket accordingly.  We will aim to have first round matches completed by the first of June and go from there.  Have fun and good luck!

Criss, you and I are paired together in the first round, so your streak ends with me. :)

As it gets warmer, let's touch base and discuss where we should play.

Take care, Tom

Mr. Reese, thank you again for organizing this.

Mr. Allen and I are not going to waste any time. With a beautiful day in Cincinnati planned for this Sunday, we will kick things off at my club, Miami View Golf Club. 1960 Bill Diddel, with lots of member help along the way. Recent modifications by the Hurdzan Group, with a whole bunch more to go in our plan.

The Titschinger/Allen match will be postponed to a future date. Seemingly, the entire membership decided to take advantage of the glorious weather today, therefore taking our spot on the tee sheet. If the recent weekend weather holds up, we won't have to wait too long.

Please don't change the Wolter/Moore/Hill bracket -- we have a get together planned to see if Moore or Hill moves on.

Buck -

Not moving things around, just added where someone was scheduled to play a BYE.  Everyone still has the same 1st, 2nd round opponents.  Sorry for the confusion.

Happy to report Steve Burrows and myself were able to play our first round match on Wednesday at Victoria National in southern Indiana.

Steve hadn't swung a golf club since September, which allowed me to jump out to a 2-up* lead by the 6th hole. An asterisk was necessary due to a putt of mine on five coming in a bit too hot. Was center cup, however with the COVID-19 cups set only about an inch under the surface, it skipped out and rolled a few feet past. We agreed to put an asterisk on the card and consult GCA for a ruling if necessary.

However after I found the water on three consecutive par 3's and Steve hitting the green on each one, Steve jumped back into the lead and played solidly over the difficult closing holes to punch his ticket into round 2 with a 4&3 victory.

If any of the finalists want a caddie for Crystal Downs I'm there!!

Second Year in row I go down on Sand Valley in blowout fashion, this time 5 and 4 to Dan Moore. Brad and Dan still need to play their match.

Brian Laurent and I played our match last Friday at Royal American, a Hurdzan/Fry design located near Columbus. In a titanic struggle which was close primarily due to the number of strokes that he gave me, Brian vanquished me 2&1. It was a terrific afternoon on a decent golf course. No one will mistake Royal American for a great design, but it has decent width, a number of water hazards (in the form of creeks, marshes and ponds that dot the layout) and somewhat bland greens (until the last three holes which have putting surfaces with some interesting movement). Good luck to Brian as he advances.

Tom Allen and I played Miami View Golf Club today. The course is in Miamitown, OH on Cincinnati's west side. As home course advantage and pops were not enough, we started off the back 9. It was all a conspiracy to thoroughly confuse my opponent.

In a city of full-service country clubs, Miami View is a healthy change of pace. Tired of the public golf scene but not wanting a full-service country club, the founding members of Miami View set forth to form a private golf club that the average family could enjoy. Golf is the focus of Miami View. Its Spartan clubhouse is by design. Aside from the course, a nice driving range was installed in the mid 2000's. There's also a short game area, which will hopefully get expanded at a future date.

Miami View intended to replace its (perhaps) functionality obsolete clubhouse with a new build. While the building would still be modest in line with Miami View values, it wasn't going to come cheap. By the time the vote passed and we were ready to get bids, they were way higher thanks to a construction boom that was happening. Instead, we pivoted and voted on a much less expensive Pavillion building. This has been a huge hit with members. More people are eating/hanging out at the club, and the casual nature of the dining is more in line with the club's culture. Miami View has the cheapest regular member dues of any club in the Cincinnati area. The small infrastructure and focus on the golf course help to keep it this way.

The course was laid out by Bill Diddel in 1960, with the full 18 being playable in 1961. It's a solid Doak 3 of a course. One I wouldn't necessarily travel for, but one I do very much enjoy having as my everyday course. Good land movement, a good mix of par 3s, and required draw and fade shots keep things interesting.

A gentle handshake may be present at Miami View if the 470 yard par 4 1st becomes a 490 par 5, as the Hurdzan master plan dictates. For now, it's a slap in the face; followed by the 440 yard 2nd. After that, things do get easier. It's a mental hurdle first-time players must get over.

As mentioned, Hurdzan Group laid out a master plan, and some of it was executed against in the fall of 2018. I used this opportunity to talk Tom's ear off about all the changes, new and upcoming; further distracting him.

With a perfect weather day in Cincinnati on my home course, I prevailed 3&2.
