Carl - each hole a total of 9 points have to be earned.

If all three tie (net) each gets 3.
If two tie and one has a worse score: 4/4/1
If one wins and two have a worse score: 5/2/2
All three have a different score: 5/3/1 (or 4/3/2 if you want to keep the game closer for someone that isn’t going to play to their HC that day...).

I get that part, but not the "will add 1-2 points on the back nine if anyone makes a gross par - gives the third place player something to play for."

Ok - at the turn the 3rd place could say “whatcha guys think, 3 extra points per person for gross birdies?” One guy says no, one says yes do they settle on 1.5 pts. And the 3rd place continues his poor play so it doesn’t help him but his friends applaud their own relative generosity.

OK, I see what you mean.  Thanks.  It's a bit of a gamble!!!

I like the Stableford version where you count all your strokes!

Thanks everyone.  In case you did not get the message, how can really old guys and gals keep playing without unduly holding others up?  How about a guy (not I) who was a two term club president and now in late 80's has serious distance issues but still enjoys the competitive game and the camaraderie.  Sorry, but "Just give it up" is not an acceptable answer.

Carl - another idea similar to stableford would be to have everyone play a match against his/her handicap.  Once you get above par plus your handicap strokes on each hole, you pick up.

Alternate shot also speeds up play.  It is also fun to have both players tee off and alternate from there to the hole.  In both formats of play, the use of two balls rather than 4 means that you will play faster than the surrounding course.  These games require the right attitude and a sense of humor but I love playing them.

Jason, why did I not think of alternate shot? In my personal experience it's not popular in the USA.  However, it is a good game, but a tough one, from the mental standpoint.  So, not sure whether I can find acceptance, but I'll try to give it a try.  Thanks.
