Courses with more than 18 holes

And Hollinwell certainly used to have a couple of extra holes that made a loop of 9 back to the clubhouse from the 7th green. It’s 30+ years since I played them but I assume they’re still there.

To this day I have never played the two spare holes at Notts. Although, I didn't realize they were so old. I thought they were about 12-15 years old. I recall work being done on those holes.






Perhaps I’m misremembering. I grew up a few miles from Hollinwell and was lucky enough to be play there fairly regularly as a junior.  I can’t have been there more than 3 or 4 times in the past 30 years but perhaps it was more recently that I played those two holes.

Both County Louth and Lahinch have 19 holes but neither was intended to play in succession- they are either / or alternates, the par-3 17th at the former and the par-3 11th at the latter.


So they can’t be used to take other holes out of play either.


The Island has the extra par-3 (between 3 & 4) whilst the members decide on whether they go forward with their redesign of 7 / 8 / 9.

Kahkwa has a tie-breaker short hole after the 18th, but that's not really an extra "hole." It's a small green and an 80-90 yard shot IIRC.

My home course, Glendale in Winnipeg has 19 holes.  The extra hole was pulled out of the routing after a substantial renovation in 1987 to our Stanley Thompson course.  It is a short 125 yard par three playing alongside the river to a postage stamp green.  It has not been maintained to the same high standard as the rest of the course, which I am actively trying to change.  The hole is better than a couple of the current one-shotters in our current routing, and I'm sad to not get to play it regularly.

Riverside CC in IL (Langford originally) has an extra hole and it is a pretty good one.  Short par 3.  They did some re-routing/ re-arranging and added land and holes. 


I'm not sure how they incorporate it.

Seaton Carew and Northumberland both have 22.  SC varies which routing to use throughout the year, Northumberland has 4 "winter" holes in the middle of the course which are used by juniors in the Summer and only come into play as part of the 18 between October and March, taking out the 4 holes furthest from the clubhouse.

The Ocean Course at the Olympic Club at one point (during the 1960's, I think) had 20 holes. They were out of play by 1980 or so at the latest.

The 2 extra holes were par-3's and were recreated to be the 8th & 9th holes of the 9-hole, par-3 Cliffs Course in the 1990's.

On this subject is anyone aware of a course that has a "warm up" hole? A hole that you play on the way to the first tee. I vaguely remember reading something about the concept, but I may also be imagining that.

Columbine CC in Denver has two par-3 seventh holes that are parallel to each other; the original one is the one on the Platte River. IIRC there was a land dispute that forced them to build another hole further from the river but I think it might have been resolved. I think both of them are maintained but it has been a few years since I've played it now.

Kingston Heath has 19 I think, the wonderful par 3 10th gets taken out for Tournament play and the alternate goes in instead. I think it's to do with the flow of people around the hole with a number of other tees close by

We famously used the 19th at Streamsong for a sudden death tiebreaker to qualify for match play at the Renaissance Cup, when we had too big of a field there  [/size]

Blackthorn Golf Course in South Bend, IN has/had a bye hole to start the round named the Blarney Hole.  When the course first opened players could receive a free golf ball if they hit a boulder in the center of the fairway.  Overall length of the hole was 266 yards from the back tees to 180 yards from the front tees playing a little uphill.  There was an alternative teeing complex behind the green for the 1st hole.

It was decided to be taken out of play as overall rounds were taking longer (is that a surprise).  Good friend of mine who was the GM to open the course got a hole in one on that hole from the back tees.

Tumwater Valley, originally built by the Olympia Brewing Company in Tumwater Wa., has double parallel par threes on each nine.  In each case, there is a shorter and a longer more difficult choice.  The players get to choose which hole they want to play.  Probably not hard to guess which holes get the most play.  The course is now owned by the city of Tumwater because the brewery NLE.  It is a nice walk in the park which for old guys like me can be had for less than 25 bucks.

There’s an extra par-3 at the far end of the course at Cruden Bay. Does it ever get used?

Wasn't that hole at Cruden Bay intended to replace 15 or 16 at one time?

I was playing with a member last weekend and he told me the plan was for the new hole to replace the current par 3 11th. He was under the impression the club has concerns that the new par 3 isn’t long enough and might have to acquire some more land and/or add a new tee(s) to stretch it out a bit.

It’s been a while since I was last at CB but don’t seem to recall length being an issue with the new hole (maybe in the 125-150 yard range) particularly as it’s on such an exposed part of the property and the wind will be a big factor with tee shots playing straight towards the sea. No indication as to when it might become part of the main 18 though.

Back in the 90s my golf buddies and I would in late fall visit the Broadmoor in Colorado Springs. The resort maintained a “winter course”, which consisted of the 19 holes north of Cheyenne Mountain Boulevard. I understood that these holes are the original Ross course, plus one more hole. The first hole was to be played as a practice hole, prior to the formal 18 hole round.
I recently checked out the Broadmoor website, and it appears that the current winter course consists of only 10 holes.

Windy Knoll GC Springfield, OH used to have a bye hole (however, I do not see it on the aerial anymore?)
Forest Dunes GC Forest Dunes course has a bye hole (117 yards) with a bunker in the middle of the green
Legendary Run GC Cincinnati, OH has a bye hole 163-yard par 3
Raymond Memorial GC Columbus, OH has 22 holes, every par 3 has two holes
Streamsong Resort Blue / Red have an extra par 150-yard par 3
Black bear GC Vanderbilt, MI has a 159-yard extra par 3 to start the round
Old Channel Trail GC Montague MI  has a 27 holes of golf and a 3-hole practice course and another 3-hole practice course (that originally was 3 original Robert Bruce Harris holes) that is now abandoned.

Old Hickory GC Woodbridge, VA has a bye hole / 19^th hole that also doubles as the practice green

Saskatoon in SW Michigan has three 18 hole courses plus a three hole circuit.  Par 4-3-5.
Used as tournament tie-breaker, warmup holes or for practice.  Nice concept if you can afford it.

The Eden has an extra par 3, played alongside the estuary from a tee near the 7th - and in play today because the 5th was closed. I wondered if it perhaps used one of the original greens (it’s got a bit more about it than the new Steel holes), but looking at at the old maps it doesn’t appear to be.
