Courses with more than 18 holes
« on: December 07, 2019, 10:57:25 AM »
Regaling my list of plays this year yielded two that had 20 holes. European Club and Barnbougle Lost Farms. Sebonack has 19.  Not sure off the top of my head.

I do think that having 19 holes is a great idea for whenever you need to take a hole out of commission for maintenance/etc. you have a backup so I really like that idea.  20 holes is probably overkill and know Pat Ruddy saw 20 good greensites and built 20 holes.

How many others have more than 18?  I think there are quite a few in the UK.

Old Sandwich has 19 holes. The extra hole is a par three which plays between 100 and 150
yards.

Streamsong Red and Blue share a par three that also plays as a 19th hole for those that want to continue. I wonder how many other courses can claim the sharing feature?

The little 17th at LACC North immediately springs to mind for me.

I may be wrong but think it is more of an extra hole (like the 19th at Streamsong Tim refers to) than one that is substituted into the main 18 when another hole is undergoing maintenance etc.

At Knollwood Country Club, in Elmsford, New York many think the best par three is the 19th hole.

There’s an extra par-3 at the far end of the course at Cruden Bay. Does it ever get used?
And wasn’t there a certain course in Augusta, Georgia that was once intended to have an extra hole by the Clubhouse?

Stone Eagle and Jack's Landing (NZ), but these are par 3s near the clubhouse, pretty much used as tie-breakers.

Algonquin in New Brunswick.  The 4th was closed so we played both the long and short 10th. The short 10th is in the usual configuration. The long 10th doglegs along the north side of the driving range.

There is a lot to like at Knollwood where Ian did some very nice restoration work.

The stretch from 16-19 is a rousing and fun finishing stretch. 16 is a solid one shotter with a bold green!

Wasn't that hole at Cruden Bay intended to replace 15 or 16 at one time?

The Olde Farm has a 19th but, like Kinloch's, it's really just a press hole.

Actually, I can't think of many in the UK, but most of the leading clubs in Australia have built a 19th hole somewhere on property for the maintenance / renovation angle.  The first one I saw was Michael Clayton's for Kingston Heath, which they actually use for tournament play, skipping the little tenth.  We have built one for Royal Melbourne, Royal Adelaide, Woodlands, and Yarra Yarra.

I built 19th holes for Sebonack and Stone Eagle and Streamsong, already mentioned, but those were strictly as extra tie-breaker holes near the clubhouse.  We famously used the 19th at Streamsong for a sudden death tiebreaker to qualify for match play at the Renaissance Cup, when we had too big of a field there  :D

I agree with you on 20-hole courses, though . . . it just seems too many to me.  If you've got 15 holes, that's because there was only room for 15, but if you've got room for 20, you generally make the decision which ones you want to build.

A few in the UK:

Huddersfield (Fixby) has two extra par 3s that are used in the winter when a couple of holes that get pretty wet are taken out of play.

Seaton Carew has 22 holes.

And Hollinwell certainly used to have a couple of extra holes that made a loop of 9 back to the clubhouse from the 7th green. It’s 30+ years since I played them but I assume they’re still there.

Lake of the Pines in Auburn, CA has two 9th holes. One goes back to the clubhouse and the other starts the back nine that plays around a lake. Nice option.

To this day I have never played the two spare holes at Notts. Although, I didn't realize they were so old. I thought they were about 12-15 years old. I recall work being done on those holes.

Sutton Coldfield has two extra par 3s used in winter. I think they are better than the summer counterparts.

Northamptonshire has three extra holes that can be accessed after the 6th to make a 9 hole loop back toward the house which conveniently finishes amongst the Colt Course holes.

Walton Heath Old has a few alternative holes which can be played as 12 and 13 which means the proper 12 and 18 are dropped. The totally different 12th becomes a par 5 with 13 coming back to finish on the proper 12th green.
