2019/20 Winter GCA Book Club - FORMAT REVEALED!
« on: November 20, 2019, 06:35:10 AM »
As winter sets in for a few of us, and the golf becomes more limited, I wanted to see if there might be interest in having a sort of GCA book club?

My initial thinking was that we would collectively chose 1 architectural book to read over December / January, and then start a thread where we discuss the book, interesting theories, quotes, etc.

The benefit of the book club is two-fold: it might be that through reading an interesting book we find new material to discuss and new ideas (possibly from old sources!) to debate on new threads. It also will hopefully provide some entertainment and education in a time when most of us won't be able to play as much golf as we'd like!

If there's enough interest, we can take recommendations on the book to read, and then vote on it and set a timeframe to read the book within - aiming to regroup sometime in January to start the discussion here on the GCA discussion board.

Unlike my promise to pull together the GCA Top 100 list, I do think this will get off the ground  ;D

UPDATE: See reply 96 - The format of the Book Club discussion has been revealed!!

Great idea.  I am in.  I will let others choose the book.

I would be happy to participate.

I would suggest that Simpson's book and Hunter's are the two most enjoyable to read, and the two that go off on interesting tangents.

How about something foreign to this group think. Fazio's book.

Good one Garland!  I'm in for that book or any other.

Probably not appropriate for an international group, but for US holiday gift lists, I'm enjoying "Don't Ask What I Shot: How President Eisenhower's Love of Golf Helped Shape 1950s America," by Catherine M. Lewis, Ph.D.    Shedding some light on the "dark ages."  ;)

Wow! Ok - let's start. I appreciate that we'll need time to buy the book, and some may put it on their holiday list, so want to get the book selected soon.

As a few have pointed out, the difficulty of selecting a book is availability and price. There are a few books that I would love to read, but realistically, it isn't very inclusive if we select a book that's $100+

With the above in mind, happy to hear recommendations and I can send a link out this weekend to vote. Four books that I thought could be good reads are:

Wide Open Fairways - Brad Klein
The Architectural Side of Golf - Simpson / Wethered
Discovering Alex Russell: The Man and His Legacy
The Links - Robert Hunter

With the Architectural Side + The Links, these are normally quite pricey, but I believe there is a classic golf book website that have a number of copies for $45. I could even call them and ask for a group discount code if required.

Otherwise, let me know other recommendations that are below $100 and readily available, and I'll confirm the final list to vote on this weekend!
