The powers that be have decreed that the sand level at the foot of the bunker faces be raked 1 revet higher for the Second Round of The Open.

The amount of short to medium term intervention on this golf course, all at the R&A's direction, is getting ridiculous.  For whatever reason, I have been trying to rationalize some of the course changes...e.g. the 17th is a cool hole (in a vacuum), even if it sticks out like a sore thumb vs. the rest of the course...or, hopefully, the giant sandscrapes will eventually blend in better...but when they are literally making daily adjustments to the bunker raking, it all just becomes too much.  Holes don't exist in a vacuum, and changes made strictly for high-level tournaments seem to never be in the best interest of the course or those who play it regularly. Learning more here about the changes made to 'Royal' prior to 2006 (in addition to the changes to 'Dowie', which I was already aware of), among various other tweaks...I can't rationalize any of it, and I am not sure why I was trying to do so.
New for '24: Monifieth x2, Montrose x2, Panmure, Carnoustie x3, Scotscraig, Kingsbarns, Elie, Dumbarnie, Lundin, Belvedere, The Loop x2, Forest Dunes, Arcadia Bluffs x2, Kapalua Plantation, Windsong Farm, Minikahda, Old Barnwell Kids Course(!)

Very valid points Brian.
I’ve become less and less enamoured of the R&A in relation to The Open, changes to host courses etc.
The razzamatazz, the ever bigger pavilions, buildings and walkways, the more celebs, influencers and the like around the place and even being allowed to play the course before the event. A few too many alcohol effected spectators I suspect as well.
The Open seems to be morphing more and more from an event to test the best golfers in the World to vaudeville. The way it’s going there’ll be snake charmers and jugglers greeting the players on the 1st tee and bagpipers following the leaders down the 72nd soon.
Part of the charm of The Open was the way it was different to other significant golf events. Much more laid back and quiet and traditionally oriented. Stuffy some might refer to it as and I appreciate that the World moves on but The Opens slow paced, less hectic ‘Old World’ atmosphere and aura was in so many ways a significant part of its unique charm.

The 17th was the club’s idea, they took the ideas to Martin Ebert who designed the hole and it was presented to the R&A who also agreed on the changes. The club then built it.

YES IT IS
"Golf is happiness. It's intoxication w/o the hangover; stimulation w/o the pills. It's price is high yet its rewards are richer. Some say its a boys pastime but it builds men. It cleanses the mind/rejuvenates the body. It is these things and many more for those of us who truly love it." M.Norman

I happened to play with Travis Smyth last week who made the hole in one at The Open on Friday.  He also made double on Thursday when he went long and ended up in a foot print.  He could only advance the ball about 5 feet.

He said if you go right on the hole its just impossible.

Will be interesting if the members decide to soften it as time goes by.
