I'm not really qualified to comment on how well a super manages staff, or water usage, or who does the most with the least, or whatever criteria you want to use.  But as a golfer, I don't want Dan Lucas working anywhere else but Kingsley.

Good thread, budget and corresponding staffing ability is a major factor here, that said, a few things that I think really make a course presentation stand out - it all comes down to attention to detail in my opinion, and the best superintendents seem to have a level of ownership and pride that is above and beyond.

- Elimination of weeds
- Edged greens to help prevent foreign grass intrusion (particularly in Bermuda grass regions, where creep from fringe to green is more likely).  This also helps maintain green shape and size, so that greens do not shrink or otherwise lose their intended shape over time.  Walk-mowing helps dramatically when budgets allow.
- Tee boxes mowed in straight line (when intended to be rectangular, of course)
- Consistency of bunker sand (yes, I know bunkers are hazards, but consistent maintenance is just attention to detail)
- Firm greens so that ballmarks cause just minor dents, rather than unrepairable explosions - no over-watering
- Well-maintained, sharp mower blades, creating high quality cut consistency - good mechanics are extremely important and rarely receive the credit they deserve

RKoehn, welcome and great post....while you didn't point out a particular super but you hit it out of the park!

Presentation

Cleanliness is next to Godliness
Clean cuts , sharp delineation
no weeds , take it to dirt instead of weeds
No one rides past a piece of trash under threat of excommunication from team
Bunkers neat and work them often
As little signage as possible
Water, never a puddle ever

Are you saying he said there was no copy or that you don't have one...A shaper I used to use had a stack of about 50 xeroxed typed pages titled "Bator Bible"...wish I could find it...have not found anyone that had one...

Mike, my bad thought you were just having a little fun with me as I was genuflecting at the shrine. Will talk to the "man" and find out if he ever wrote a "bible". I've seen some reports he's written that were extremely detailed but no generic guide to success. Interesting!

Is he up that way now or in Florida?  There is definitely a Bator's Bible.  I remember reading the part about revetted bunkers he had in it. Eb Steineger was a good friend of my wife's father, who was supt at Indin Creek,Gulfstream and Everglades over his career and a friend of his father who came here from Germany and was an architect/supt in south Florida.  If you recall the time frame when the barrells were found buried at PV a while back...that's when I first saw the "bible"...

No barrels were ever buried  ::) ::)

Never saw the "bible"....Dick works as a consultant and hangs his hat somewhere near the Berkshires in Massachusetts. He has been so helpful to me and is one of the nicest curmudgeons I've ever met.

Eb Steiniger was the super when I first caddied at Pine Valley, also very famous for his work in the day. Experimented with various strains of grasses throughout his career and his vitae is very interesting.
