Will be missed.

I'm in - I believe Chris Handy would like to attend next year as well.  I will transfer payment.

Jerry

Chris is still waiting for your apology.

Jerry NO APOLOGIES Kluger will offer none.

Duncan...I have no record of your payment.

All..once folks figure out plans it will be helpful to let me know so I can include info in this post.  I am hoping we can all stay in Kington at least for Friday & Saturday.  Don't wait too long to book rooms because Kington fills up with walkers.

Maybe our very own crack (in honour of Rihc) spreadsheet master (yes, thats you Whitty) can organize an easy to read spreadsheet.

Jack Weiner and I are at Burton Friday and Saturday nights.

We will likely fly to Manchester and play one Open course with Birkdale the leader at the moment. Then play a few other courses nearby like Formby, Hillside, and Southport with it depending on advice from the well traveled.

Then we will move toward Wales and the northern courses like Aberdovey,Harlech, and Nefyn.

Again it depends on advice.

It might be nice to have you opinion leaders develop the list and comment on each course.

Paul and I are staying in the Burton Thu-Sun. We’ll do Church Stretton either pre or post Buda.

Sadly, I won't be able to make it - the dates don't work for me.  Too bad it's not a week or two earlier.  Have a good time all who go.

I can well understand the desire to play courses on the Open rota but next I would have Formby (preferably staying in their Dormy house and playing the second course as well- it's an easy walk) and Wallasey over the two you've named.

(Ps also booked into The Burton Hotel).

Mayday,
Definitely good advice to stay at Formby if you can. I haven't played any of the Southport area Open courses, but enjoyed Formby a lot. Terrific hospitality and both courses are worth seeing.

It sounds like we both suck.  We can play three matches, call them all draws and kick it around for three days.

Mayday,

If you’re only playing one Open rota course, then go for Birkdale. It’s the best course of the three in the area.

I’d third Tony and John’s Formby recommendation - it shouldn’t be missed. It’s above Hillside, S&A and Wallasey by a clear margin. Even better if you can stay on site and play the Ladies course too. I played the main course twice and have no regrets about doing so, just kicking myself I didn’t have enough time to squeeze in a round on the Ladies course, which I hear is very good.

The other option in the vicinity just south of Formby is West Lancs, which I’ve also heard good things about but haven’t played. Will need to make a detour next time I’m passing to see it and Formby Ladies.

The Lytham stay and play package is also great and worth looking into. Stay overnight in the Dormy house and get breakfast and dinner in the clubhouse. Can either play on the day of arrival or after breakfast the following day - it‘s a wonderful experience.

So you plan to play Church Stretton?  Not to ring alarm bells, but these hill top courses are not different from Cleeve Cloud in terms of sharply descending views if you catch my drift.  I could be persuaded to play a different course on the wayish other than Church Stretton.  I reckon you may like Harborne or Sandwell Park quite a bit.  Both are Colts, not much out of the way and quite flat compared to CS.

Mike,

When I visited NW England we stayed in Royal Lytham dormie house and it was nice having the clubhouse and course outside the bedroom windows. It's not for everyone as the Wi-fi wasn't all that great and the shower facilities are shared. It's a club with a friendly membership and some neat traditions. I also thought a lot of Hoylake and need to go back. Concur with other's thoughts on Formby.

You may want to consider staying in Southport as I found it to be an attractive town close to all of the courses.

I don’t think we’re going to make it next year. We have to do a Germany trip next September and it’s also rather a big, special birthday year for me, so I need to plan a ridiculous, wasteful, hedonistic, over-the-top, expensive, wild group yahoo somewhere exotic in December.

I love trip-planning and am enjoying sorting out pre and post Buda rounds.  Flying into Manchester, pre-Buda looks like Formby Ladies and Formby.  Post-Buda is Minchinhampton Old and Painswick.  That leaves room for a couple of games on the way back to Manchester with Beau Desert, Harborne, Little Aston and Cavendish the front-runners.  Looks like a no-lose proposition, but any comments on those four?

Sounds pretty fine to me.

Sometimes courses you plan to play have events on that day and thus you can’t get on the course on the day or at a time you wish.

Should this be the case post Buda then some alternatives on the way back to Manchester airport could include Blackwell (Simpson/Fowler), Sandwell Park (Colt), Sutton Coldfield (MacKenzie), Delemere Forest (Fowler), Sandiway (Colt) .... and JCB! (Robin H).

If others are thinking of playing Minchinhampton Old and/or Painswick on the Mon/Tues after Buda I can have a chat with them. They are only about 15 mins apart and about a 2 hour drive from Kington.

If folks are feeling really adventurous then about 35 mins west of Kington is the no longer existing Alister MacKenzie course at Rhayader, his only course in Wales (no passport required!) some features of which are apparently still visible on the ground - https://www.golfsmissinglinks.co.uk/index.php/wales-64/1079-rhayader-golf-club-powys

The two times I have been in the area I have made sure not to miss Delamere Forest a majestic layout that has not dissapointed plus the clubhouse has that warm cozy but classy English decor that is just so rich and comfortable and delicious food.

For sure I would suggest Cavendish.  Its not quite as good as Beau Desert, but it makes up for this with a bit of Dr Mac flair. At the end of the day, all the courses offer something of interest so you can't go wrong.

Hmm, good point. I might have to rethink that one. To be honest I haven't looked at the map and thought about the logistics anyway so maybe a course not quite as far down maybe ? Maybe need to confer further with you and Dai on that.
