Congrats to the Europeans. It was a remarkable and exciting finish. Catriona Matthew is the first Captain from Scotland so could not be more fitting for her team to prevail at Gleneagles.

I am just back from watching the last 45 minutes of the event in the Dornoch clubhouse. When Charlie Hull butchered the 18th hole to halve instead of win her match, I figured the US team could not lose.

Then Bronte Law holes a long putt to go up in her match and Suzann Pettersen (38-years old and a controversial Captain's pick) holes an 8-footer in the last match alive on the last hole to win the Cup. Matchplay is a funny thing.

As you might imagine, the locals are very happy.

Would have been more fitting if had been on James Braid course rather than a Jack Nicklaus course. Like playing the US Open on Pinehurst #8. Who choses these courses? A fine follow up to the Women's British Open on Woburn's parkland course.

It is the very unfortunate tendency to over manicure/condition the course which seems to be very important to many golfers even some on here. It is aesthetics over substance. Having said that the course has improved over the years though it is still the third (possibly fourth) best course there.

I'd be interested to hear thoughts on #18 from anyone who's played the course.  Playing less than 450 yards today, I'd have expected several players to reach the green in two.  A few tried, but I didn't see anyone pull it off.  So, was the way that Petterson and Alex played the hole (Petterson due to her pushed tee shot) the best path to a birdie?  With the green set at a very awkward angle to the fairway and fall-offs on several sides, the hole seems a bit tricked up and what happened to Charley Hull must happen to many resort guests.

In the end, though, the hole did produce great drama.

Saturday was dogged with ridiculously slow play that should have been penalised but was not. However the singles were outstanding in their excitement levels. Great television in my opnion.

And to be transparent, I was fully rooting for the USA and still loved it.

I was on my way to the Field Club and my passenger kept refreshing the leaderboard. It looked like, once Salas held on to get to 13 1/2, that the U.S. would at least retain the Cup, but then the two players lost the next three holes they played to lose 1 down and 2&1, and so that's all she wrote. I found out about Suzann's retirement later that night.

The teams were never, at the completion of any matches, separated by more than a point. What a closely contested tournament.

If only both sides had made more of the short putts, it could have been closely contested AND some great golf.
