Tuesday - RM East and West[/size]Wednesday - RM East and West

Having organized many trips for golfing buddies, I've started playing the best course twice. Especially one as important as RM. The second play will be so much more enjoyable.

Mark,

My point was about the value I'd place on maximising variety in the courses chosen, and I stand by that. Some might put Peninsula-Kingswood above other sandbelt courses in the pecking order, but there is a point as you sample the depth of offerings in a region like the Melbourne sandbelt or London heathlands where you stop seeing significant newness or difference in what the courses offer.

For a golfer visiting from afar who might not get back, I think there's more value in playing National (Moonah), St Andrews Beach, Barwon, 13th Beach and Port Fairy (if they'll justify the drive) rather than getting down into the middle of the sandbelt pack and seeing less-good versions of what you've already played.

Scott,

Not sure I agree with all of this.  If anyone is well travelled in the UK, or planning to be, there would be very little reason to go to Port Fairy or even Barwon Heads.  There is very little original interesting architecture at these courses.  Conversely, a lot of the second tier sandbelt courses have a heap of really interesting architecture - commonwealth, YY, woodlands, for starters.  I would also say that Peninsula's modern take on the sandbelt style would be of significant interest and contrast to RM etc.

I do agree that a trip to the Mornington Peninsula to see St Andrews Beach and one other good course (moonah, gunnamatta) is a good idea.

Dave,

It's worth seeing Commonwealth for the 16th hole alone showing off how a dogleg around a lake on the left should work.

Mike,

If you got out of your car, had a look at the 9th, walked over to 15, and 16, then across to the 2nd and 17th greens and back to your car, you have probably seen more great architecture in your 1 mile walk than you would playing 18 holes on any course outside the worlds top 150. Fair call?

Dave - Yes - that's a fair call. 9,15 and 16 are great holes but built both 3s now and many would likely complain 'you can't run the ball onto the green' and 'the bunker shots are too difficult for the average players'. And the tired old 'they only design for pros'

A short but interesting before and after video of the 18th hole on the North course.

If it doesn't get your juices flowing, then I don't know what will.
