Favorite Tee Box - Non-Ocean Division
« on: June 11, 2019, 11:39:22 PM »
Last week I was lucky enough to play Essex County (MA) and found myself on the back tee on the 16th hole late in the afternoon. The tee is hard halfway up on the rocky hill that you play up and over on 17 and 18; in front of you and to the right is the magical field that holds holes 1-3 and 15-16. Behind you, Essex's classic and elegant clubhouse behind the 1st tee. I can't think of a tee box with a better combination of view, golf course quality, and specific hole.

Unfortunately I can't find any pictures since the tree removal work and the new back tee was put into play. It is worth highlighting that these views are made possible because of the excellent tree work that has been done over the last decade.

Any other nominations for your favorite tee box that doesn't have an ocean view?

The 18th tee at Stanford University Golf Course is blessed with an excellent long range view of the San Francisco Bay peninsula.  On a clear day, one can see across San Francisco and the Golden Gate towards Mt. Tamalpais in Marin County, perhaps 40 miles away.  You can also see the 18th green nestled against the low profile clubhouse 440 yards away.  A rumored tradition in the area was to go "ice sliding" down the 18th fairway; buy blocks of ice and sneak onto the course to slide down the hill.

That's the first view I thought of reading the opening post.

1st at Riviera always gets me nervous
16th at Rustic Canyon with that climb up to that tee and then turning around to see the entire back 9 is breathtaking no matter how many times I've made that climb

#13 ANGC is pretty special. Secluded, quiet, facing a magnificent fairway and fun hole, and views of #12 and #11. It does not have the long views, however.

I have to agree #18 at Stanford is very special, both on clear days and on days when the coast is covered by fog and the valley is clear.

I suspect though that the likes of Rock Creek Cattle Company or Gozzer Ranch have the US winners.

Admittedly, I am one of the few admirers of runway tees.  You could land a plane on the 8th at Walton Heath Old and the 4th at Plainfield.

I can't be bothered to walk back to WHO's 8th tee let alone contemplate admiring it. The 8th is not a hole I have much time for. I think it's better from the ladies tee. If a hole is boring get the boredom over quickly  ;D

Tee no. 1 at the Cascades.  Next to  an attractive old 20's building, gorgeous site, understated quiet tee box.

I've seen some high tee boxes before, but Lakota Canyon #8 is on a pretty high perch, so much so you gotta be a little careful.

As an alternative, #11 at Black Rock is pretty spectacular with view of the hole and lake...as well as Gozzer Ranch #15 and 16

The back tee on #17 at Redlands Mesa is pretty awesome.

It would also fit in a "places on golf courses where you could die" thread.

#10 at Milwaukee CC is pretty impressive; right next to the side porch of the clubhouse with the Milwaukee River glistening in the distance.

Which tee? The back ones are miles back, but the normal one is only about a 30 yard walk back from the bridal path.

As for as walton goes though I like 5 new and 14 old. Both give great vistas of the golf courses. 3 New is a bit like that too.

For the NLE subset I would think 3 or 13 at Sagebrush.

Banff 2,4 (Devils Cauldron) or 15 with the hotel in the background.  Also in Canada Jasper 9th (Cleopatra) and Silvetip's 13th with the 3 jagged peaks.

In Oregon something with a view of Mt. Hood (Indian Creek 1 or 7) or the Three Sisters (Pronghorn Fazio 11, Tetherow 3, Juniper 4).

But winner of the Mountain Division would be something in Nepal or Tibet.
