Has anyone yet determined the original architect of Grover Cleveland (formerly known as CC of Buffalo)?   I seem to recall some prior discussion in that regard.   

I also need to get up there and play it.

Mike, I believe that Scott (former GCA and gca guy) is quoted, but Mark Gaughan wrote the piece.


Ross was brought in after the Open, to punch up the Main/Bailey layout that hosted the tournament. Greens attributed to Travis seem unlikely to be his, or they were softened over the years.


As the city moved outward, the club decided to move east, and retained Ross to develop the new/3rd iteration of the CC of B. After a number of a-clowns modernized the course over the years, Ron Forse and squad came through in the early 2010s to bring her back to her origins.


The one concession to the membership was the tree on the 17th. It had grown so much in the intervening years, that the membership could not bear losing her. As a result, the fairway runs out to the right, instead of left, as Ross designed her.

The original course architect from 1905 is unknown.  Travis came in a few years later, but the course was redone by Ross in the late teens. There's an April 10, 1923 Buffalo Morning Express article that notes the present course was laid out by Ross, suggesting his work was more than just a tweak.

It seems the club moved to the site of Grover Cleveland and established a nine hole course (the Chairman of the Green Committee and later USGA official Ganson Depew is cited in the linked article as designing the first nine holes. )


The course became 18 holes by 1905, possibly with Travis's assistance.  ( he had relatives in the area and his nephew was one of the top players at the club)  Travis was also involved in toughening the bunkering for the 1912 US Open.


As you mentioned, Ross came later after some property was lost and reconfigured some holes.  I'll have to look at the Tufts Archive to see what if anything is available in that regard.  I recall looking at the 1912 routing some time back and as I recall much remains in today's course.


**EDIT** the Ross drawings in Tufts are of today's course which opened around 1925-26.
