OT - Are You Kidding Me?
« on: April 13, 2019, 09:11:52 PM »
Molinari's 35-yard bunker shot on #18 from the front-left bunker to the uphill back-right pin (to less than 2 feet) was as impressive as any shot I saw today.

How many golfers even practice 35-yard bunker shots?

Faldo guessed it was a 54 degree wedge.

I was there for the Monday practice round, first time since 2011. The scale of the greens and bunkers was unbelievable. I am fairly certain there are more 30-50 yard bunker shots then any other course I have ever seen.

I was definitely impressed with that shot.  His short game is superb.

I know I am supposed to think golf is broken and I understand some of the arguments. However, this has to be the finest play from top golfers in history. Molinari hasn't made a bogey since the earth cooled. I am not sure he missed a shot today. Between he and Koepka the last three majors. And Tiger is good enough to compete, plus Finau and the ball striking of Adam Scott. If this doesn't interest you get therapy. Great time to be alive.

The course is ridiculously hard, but when conditions are soft like today that’s not enough to contain today’s best golfers (and today’s equipment).  There were dozens of epic shots from the leaders today.  How about Finau hitting it to a foot, from 261 yards up the hill on #8?  With a four-iron!

If I was wagering on an up and in I would have bet against Molinari. That was an incredible shot!

The crazy thing about that shot is how little you can see from short left of that green.

It's almost impossible to,tell from TV what he could see, but that lip os really high.
Over time, the guy in the ideal position derives an advantage, and delivering him further  advantage is not worth making the rest of the players suffer at the expense of fun, variety, and ultimately cost -- Jeff Warne, 12-08-2010

When the bunkers are that pure and consistent, the pros don’t seem to mind being in them.
No question it was a great shot and judging distance out of a bunker like that is genius. But I think they practice shots like that due to scale of bunkering at ANGC.

Just saw (on TV) Jon Rahm hit a 30 yard bunker shot to 18” on #4.

Brooks Koepka just hit a 35+ yard bunker shot on #2 to 6’ and made birdie.

I would prefer seeing bunkers not raked so they are actually hazards.
With modern sand, great drainage and new methodologies, one often hears “Get in the bunker!”, from today’s pros upon hitting a shot awry.

Adam Scott would be absolutely demolishing this field...if he could just putt.  Can't believe how many very make-able 6-8 footers he's missed.

Completely agreed on the sentiment overall, some very fine play all around!

Tiger missed more than a handful. Don't remember Adam hitting a live TV shot on Sunday.

Vegas had him at 14:1. That bloodbath will match his shirt choice.

Pete,

I was referring to yesterday when Scott missed a whole grundle of short putts....but Tiger was dropping tons of long bombs on both Friday and Saturday....

"Who practices 35 yard sand shots?"

When did the full fledged short practice area become a thing?  In about 1988 I saw the first one.  At the see time I saw Vijay hit 35 yard wedge shots for fifteen minutes.  As an aside, watching Vijay practice both tires me out and reminds me why I am not a professional.
The only way of really finding out a man's true character is to play golf with him. In no other walk of life does the cloven hoof so quickly display itself.
