Country club relocations?
« on: March 31, 2019, 05:14:40 PM »
Austin CC has relocated twice since it was established. Do you know of other country clubs that have relocated sites and left the original course behind.
I love golf, the fightin irish, and beautiful women depending on the season and availability.

Greenridge CC in Grand Rapids, MI moved to a new locale with 36 holes in Ada, MI. I believe Kent CC in Grand Rapids was a near Fisk Lake originally, but at it’s current location just north of downtown GR for a long time.

There’s probably a lot of these situations across the country.

It certainly is not unusual for clubs to relocate. I was a member at The CC at Woodmore (Prince George's CC) which relocated in the 80's. The old site was a wonderful Ross layout and even held a Women's National Open.

San Francisco GC is at its 3rd location. The original one (pre-1900) is where the Presidio Golf Course (and Club) is now located. Then it moved to the Ingleside District of SF before moving to its present location.

The Hollywood Golf Club, now in Deal, NJ, is also in its 3rd location. It started in the West End neighborhood of Long Branch, NJ (a few blocks from where I grew up). Then it moved to the Norwood neighborhood of West Long Branch before moving to Deal.

Sunnybrook moved in the 1950s as their original course is now Flourtown CC, now 9 holes,  in the Philly 'burbs.

Originally designed by Donald Ross it was the original Sunnybrook G.C. but in the early 50’s Springfield Township took over the grounds and a portion of the property was developed into houses. The remaining grounds were redesigned by George Fazio and it became Flourtown Country Club!

A few relocations in Canada would include three for Royal Montreal since 1874, two for Toronto's Rosedale since 1895 and two for the London Hunt since 1904.

You must have been thinking of something else when you typed this.  :) PGCC was a Wm Flynn design, originally Beaver Dam CC. I visited the site 15 years ago and a few of Flynn's holes were still visible.

Craig, PGCC was designed by Ross in 1921 and opened in 1923. It did begin life as Beaver Dam until 1941. There were rumors that Flynn was involved but I can't find it.

Is don't know where the information on the Ross connection came from. An article in the Washington Post in 1923 attributed the original 9-hole course on the site to a collaboration between Emmet and Frank james from the Chevy Chase Club. Flynn's drawings and a site plan from the 1920s exist and perfectly match a 1937 aerial. Ross was active in DC, particularly at the excellent Indian Spring CC, and it's possible he may have held some discussions on the Beaver Dam/PGCC property but I haven't seen any evidence that he contributed to the design.

In Phildelphia alone,

Famously:
Merion
Philadelphia Country Club
Aronimink
Huntingdon Valley
Philadelphia Cricket Club (acquired land for a new golf course, older course now nine holes)

Less famously:
Sunnybrook
Cedarbrook
St. David's
White Manor (older course now the lovely Paxon Hollow)

I think the majority of these relocations were because valuable leases ran out on the old properties - which were mostly still within the confines of the City of Philadelphia - and the club bought new land.

Not coincidental to this is the fact that almost all of these courses had some member of the so-called "Philadelphia School" working on the new projects. Sunnybrook and Cedarbrook subsequently moved again to their current sites.

 8)  Houston Country Club moved, once.

from Wiki
Originally it occupied an 18-hole course southeast of downtown Houston. The country club moved to its current Tanglewood location in 1957. The former Houston Country Club was renamed the Houston Executive Club. The City of Houston purchased the Houston Executive Club in 1972 and renamed it the Gus Wortham Golf Course.

The 109 year old  "Gus" reopened last fall after some long needed renovation, view while work in progress https://vimeo.com/247431856
