Mission Statement

I often recommend to clubs that have asked us to consult, that they first prepare a Mission Statement for us, rather than having us impose one upon them.


The best one I've ever seen came to me in a recent RFP.  Here it is:


"The Club's character is determined by its location and traditions.  It is a two-ball Club, with the membership preferring easy access, fast play and hard greens.  Match play is more common than medal golf.  There are no tee times, dogs are welcome and [REDACTED] determines the rhythm of the day.  The Membership defend the Club's ethos staunchly and there is little impetus for change."


Care to guess who has their priorities in such order?




Note:  I redacted two words so it didn't give away the club's identity directly.  I will come back later to give those away.

Early Candidate for OT Post of the Year.  Literally laughed out loud in my office when I read this.  I wonder if Jack Gordon (or is it Jame Gumb?) is a member of this mystery club?? (or given the fact that he was gunned down by Clarice Starling, was a member).....

Ireland, specifically
It probably doesn't host many or any big/pro tournaments, but it isn't hyper private either
Obviously not a 'resort' course or a previously 'Americanized' one
But it's been 'worked on' before, ie by another architect, in the last 30 years or so
Not Royal County Down or Ballybunion or Portmarnock
Lahinch?

Adam-I don’t know of any clubs that are “two ball only” in the U.S. I learned something from your post in that I wasn’t aware that said clubs were in England and Scotland but not Ireland.

I was going on the basis that they have now realised their mistake... that and the no tee-times.


But Brancaster has to be favourite and Mark must have it with “the tide”.


Could be Pulborough as a 3rd guess. Maybe Rye. Less likely RAF I would have thought.

I am going for Rye. Only because Swinley not a predominantly 2 ball club. Not sure if Rye is dog-friendly though?
