Rich,

They used to do this in Manhattan, 360 ! Years ago.

http://www.golfclubatlas.com/forum/index.php/topic,14677.msg250228.html#msg250228

An ordinance was passed in 1659, to stop people from playing golf in the streets.
From the law of December 10, 1659:

Golf ... which causes great damage to the windows of the Houses, and exposes people to the danger of being wounded...

Many thanks for that, Neil.

Are you sure that they were playing "Gowf" rather than "Kolven", given that up to 1664 Manhattan was owned by the Dutch? :)

As a member of the Honorable Company of Reverse Jans Golfers who play what was formerly known as the Peter Jans course in Evanston, Illinois, I am compelled to correct your title.  That course is undergoing a wonderful renovation and is now known as Canal Shores.  It has been the subject of several discussions.

I recall trying to play "Reverse Jams" on my turntable in the 1970s, and if you played The Beatles White Album Revolution #9 backwards it said stuff like, "short grass is best", and "the Dark Ages are over", which may have presciently been a sign of the golf architectural renaissance of the past few decades.

Truly, the Reverse Jans thread was much more entertaining, given the choice.

Someone should bump that thread.  Shivas was at his absolute best describing that one!  ;D

Sadly, I don't believe the original Reverse Jans thread survived the Great GCA Thread Purge of 2xxx.

At least my link isn't working any longer.   Does anyone have anything archived offline?

That’s all I can find after about an hour of searching.

I’m pretty sure there were subsequent posts through 2009, as well as the missing pages 2-4 in that capture.

Canal Shores has been one of it's monikers since I was a kid. It's fitting that it now holds it.

There is some potentially disturbing news about the course.

Rumor has it, someone has laid claim to the 18th fairway.

Any real facts about this legal dispute would be appreciated.

No dispute about the 18th hole that I am aware of. The 10th hole, yes. Posted an update about that here:
