A profound loss.

I know many in this community would have known her personally, and to all of you I offer my most sincere condolences. From what I know about her, I believe that she was an amazing lady and also contributed more to Pete's body of work than perhaps I'll ever know.

With what we know about Pete's illness, it is somewhat surprising (and obviously all the more saddening) to me that she passed first. I hope Pete is okay.

I would vote for her into the Hall of Fame.  She is the Dolly Madison of golf.

Oh man. Such a loss, particularly for Pete, because as I understand things she was still his primary caretaker as he battles his condition.

I always enjoyed hearing the stories about how much she contributed to Pete's work. Perhaps we can have a tribute at the Players this year, since the 17th was largely her idea (IIRC).

Alice was a driving force to make courses more friendly for women, and she was an amazing personality. I interviewed her with Pete back in 2000 and she was the "main interrupter" which I am sure Pete would applaud. One would speak, and the other would finish...it was like a comedy routine! Pete and Alice were inseparable. I cherish the discussions we had, and every opportunity I had to speak with her and Pete. She will be missed. It is a profound loss in golf and within the circles of golf design.

I’ve been out working all day - Mrs Dye would have approved - and when I finally checked messages this evening there were about five of them about Alice.

It’s really heartbreaking news.  If Mrs Dye hadn’t bothered to answer my letters when I was in college, there’s no way I would be doing what I’m doing today.  And the same is true for many many others in this business, or anyone who ever worked for me.

Aside from that, as I’ve written here before, I don’t think many have understood how much Alice contributed to Pete’s success.  I was only on the job at Long Cove for a week or two when I heard one of the crew (PB’s roommate Steve Lucciola) say, “Nothing is finished until Miss Allie says it’s okay.”  There were lots of people on site who could express an opinion, but Alice’s opinion always meant the most to Pete.  She was his sounding board over whether to make it harder or gentler or whether he had it right.

There would be a lot more great architects if only they had someone they could rely on for that thumbs-up, instead of the people they listen to now.

The golf world is poorer but Heaven is richer. I met her once many years ago. She was the queen of all she surveyed.

This is such sad news. I met her but once, but Pete always praised her to the skies for everything. How devastating for the family.

I loved when Alice would attend ASGCA meetings. She was very friendly, gracious, funny and incredibly witty. If you were lucky enough to play with her, she would dispense brilliant advice on how the game should be played and the course should be designed.

She would do the same over the phone too. I needed her picks for a Major's Pool I used to run and she finished her picks up by going straight into her latest thoughts on golf design and how to make courses more playable for both ladies and men. I loved that she cared enough to spend time sharing her thoughts with a young unknown designer.

I feel for Perry,PB and Pete today.

Thanks for sharing stories about her. It seems like the Dyes lived a fairy tale life of sorts. I don’t mean that in any sort of envious way, more in admiration. She will be greatly missed by many, which is a legacy most would be happy with.
