A summer's day at Brancaster. Or maybe the back nine at Harlech, ideally on a spring evening with light on Snowdonia. That's the most fun I have had in golf.

Ira -
not my place to say (as a mere member of the entourage here and not a star), but I think you just earned your gca.com badge of honour with that "transcends fun" bit of business!
Well done!

We've done that list for each volume of The Confidential Guide.

For Volume 1, it was:

North Berwick
Machrihanish
Cruden Bay
Shiskine
Dooks
Gullane #3
Lahinch

I don't have any idea why we stopped at seven courses, in the UK of all places!
Gullane 3 is more fun than Elie?  In whose weird world can that be said with a serious face?

In June I will be riding the first three stages of this year's Tour de France route for charity.  630km (394 miles) in three days, with 7800m (25,600 feet) of climbing for the William Wates Memorial Trust (https://rideleloop.org/the-charity/) which supports underprivileged young people.

Well I did play Gullane 3 with Archie Baird and John Ashworth, so it might have been the company.

While looking something up in Darwin's Golf Courses of the British Isles, I came across this passage:

"For pure, unadulterated fun I have yet to see the equal of this course."

Can anyone guess it without looking it up?

I've seen people say CPC, but for me it was closer to feelings of awe, amazement, and "I can't believe I'm actually playing this course" as opposed to just pure fun, which it no doubt had plenty of.

Do scratch golfers define "fun" differently than the bogey golfer?  A local teaching pro said he would rather play St. Andrews Jubilee over The Old Course...I didn't get the chance to press him for further explanation.

Top two are best:

Mid Pines
North Berwick

Also:
Prestwick
Elie
The Course at Yale  (unless it's really windy!))
[ Nairn, Golspie and Brora seemed like fun, too. ]

Of course, Springdale.  ( ! Home Course !   Great walk, super W Flynn greens and beautiful setting.  Really fun in October or whenever firm, especially greens. )

North Berwick: The most fun back 9 in golf?
Pac Dunes: I think it is my favorite course.
Barnbougle: The most fun front 9 in golf?
Rye: Most challenging fun. On top, over, and around dunes, tough par threes, with enough easier holes in between to not make it a slog.
Lawsonia: Big, bold, wild and crazy fun. Come to think about it that might just be Langford and Moreau. I felt the same way about Culver.

For what it's worth I didn't think Tobacco Road was very fun. It was challenging, interesting, and different, but I don't think it was fun.

However, the more I think about it I have trouble thinking of times when I don't have fun when I play golf.

Also, what makes golf fun? It might be width. I agree with Conley Hurst that Sunningdale Old was really fun. I didn't enjoy the new nearly as much. I really think my reason is that I thought the fairways being tight with the very penal heather on Sunningdale New wasn't fun for me.

I think Wide fairways firm fairways where you can swing away with the driver. Big quirky features and or interesting tumbling land and wild greens and a bunch of half par holes equals fun for me.

I also agree with Peter that fun should equal good. These 5 courses are definitely in my list of favorites all time too. Royal Melbourne West, Deal, Sandwich and Pinehurst Number 2 are also in there with my all time favorites but I think they all had a level of difficulty that makes me leave them out of the list for shear fun. What's strange though is I enjoyed playing them a ton and I had fun.

Not to thread jack but, who is the most fun architect? I vote Langford and Moreau for Classic and Doak for Modern. I have a suspicion that Raynor could also be a strong contender for most fun classic, but sadly, I have yet to play a Raynor.

If you find your way to the Highlands to play Dornoch, take the time for a drive to Durness Golf Club. 9 holes, northernmost course on the island, tons of fun.

It must have been!  As to your Darwin quote, I love to think he might have said something like that about the original Eden course.

Nah, Gullane 3 is huge fun. It may not be a better course than Elie although haven't played Elie enough to say, but it can certainly hold it's head up in any company when it comes to fun IMO. Of course it also depends on how you define what gives you fun. For me what makes Gullane 3 fun is that its not a slog but it can easily bite your bum if you try to overpower it, but then again it allows recovery shots although you have to work for them. In short (and it is short) you are always in the game while at the same time being tested.

I didn't either. The first time it was almost obnoxious how over the top it was, and the second time it was relatively easy for anyone with an ounce of restraint. The most fun I had there was just watching other people react to it, and that was somewhat limited.

I've played well there too, so it's not that.
