I wouldn't go to Addington if I were you. It has fallen off a cliff.
The maintenance is atrocious, because it is ran even more on a shoestring than ever.
Expect very bad greens and aprons. Should a 1913 Abercrombie design of that potential quality be an aerial game course? I think not. Unfortunately they let anyone trample the greens when frozen, and you can lose your ball a meter away from the putting surface because it's cheaper not to mow around greens. Leave the fairway and you'll find yourself in brambles and stones. They made design mistakes like on 10th: who nowadays decides to flatten a crumpled fairway?
A great design, good fun if you play in perfect conditions, but only if you hit every fairway and green. Nice views and quiet.
No recovery shot though, no strategy left, trees impeding, silly OB, concrete-style runoffs...it's a shame.
The Addington is in real danger of oblivion. We might lose that historic gem for good. It needs to be taken over urgently and ran as a members club.
Walton Heath, Hankley Common for the best ones.
Addington Palace is a very decent cheap quirky and fun course next door to the Addington and boast some of the best greens of Surrey.
