Aberdeen CC in Boynton Beach, FL - a successful renovation.
« on: December 28, 2018, 06:33:14 PM »
Aberdeen Country Club in Boynton Beach, Florida was originally done by Desmond Muirhead and in my mind was a complete mess. Aerial views showed greens with bunkers on either side looking as if they had teeth, an island fairway on a par 5, a green completely surrounded by sand, a flat hole with two mounds about 15 feet high that the members affectionally referred to as the "Dolly Parton" hole, etc.  A couple of attempts to tone things down and rebuild greens, etc., did nothing to help the situation.  Finally, a major renovation by Jim Fazio has turned the course into a fun course, with some interesting holes, well contoured greens, and nearly all of the ridiculous features removed.  I did play the course with 3 members who were decent players and the island fairway is still a problem although the other playing option for the hole now works far better. It isn't the best private club in the area but it is fun and could easily be a course to be enjoyed regularly as a member.
