Lots of Hudson National buzz in 2018.  Have not played it in years, was Fazio called in for updates?

Looking like a skyrocket about to occur in the ratings.

I can't imagine what they have done to it that would make it worthy of attention.  I didn't think the original course was a very good example of Fazio's work.  It's not meant to be walked, and even in a cart some of the green-to-tee distances are enough to make you break out your cell phone.

Terradyne
Stone Harbor
Kiln Creek
Pine Bay
Heatherridge
D. Fairchild Wheeler
Fresh Pond
Drummond Island
Wilderness Valley
Rolling Hills, IL

Jud-D. Fairchild Wheeler aka “The Wheel” has some really good holes spread out over the two courses. As with many city owned facilities maintenance budgets have always been severely restricted and for that reason many stay away. It’s a great spot for Winter golf in that the pins stay in if the weather cooperates. Atmosphere wise it reminds me of Bethpage as there are plenty of Damon Runyon type characters hanging around setting up games and paying off bets. My last play was New Year’s Day 2015 with another GCA’er who drove up from Manhattan. A good time was had by all.

Tim:

I think Jud was having fun with you as his list includes all of the 0's and 1's on the Doak Scale in volume 3 of The Confidential Guide.

You can have fun on any course playing with fun people -- but that doesn't mean the course is any good.

Tom-You can’t be picky in Connecticut in January. ;D  I think you only rated 18 of the 36 holes in 1980 and I don’t know if you stuck with that in Volume 3 or if there was another visit. I agree that there are some severe holes which overshadow some good ones. A fair amount of tree clearing has been done since 1980 softening some of the angles.

What did the course look like?  It's been a long time since I've been back through Myrtle Beach.  Last time I saw it, the myrtles we planted to look like gorse bushes were starting to look like trees!

Here's a link to photos from a late afternoon round in 2016 (with a few from 2007 also included) I played it again in 2018 and don't recall anything different than shown in the 2016 photos.

Unfortunately the course was SOAKED the day I played it. It was during the summer, and we had gotten a ton of rain over the day or two before. With that being said, I thought the course was in pretty good condition overall. I can't recall a ton of out of place looking trees other than some that sat between 11 and 13 (at least I think those were the holes?). Seems like I remember there being some taller trees there. It also seemed like a few of the corridors on the front (maybe 5 and 6?) might have tightened up from what they were originally supposed to be.

I really should be able to remember more. I was single stuck between a foursome and five some going off the back (the 3 I had been paired with didn't show up). I think the round took 5:30 hours. As I told the guys behind me though, it beat the heck out having to tag along for mall/outlet shopping. Growing up near the beach I had never played it and wasn't going to wait any longer to play your closest course to me!

Despite the obvious issues with a Myrtle Beach resort course and the absurd amount of rain, I still had a lot of fun playing it. I would love to get another chance to play it in the future when it was a little firmer (if they ever stop watering it enough to let it get firm!)

That style reminds me a ton of Bulls Bay.

Thanks Eric.  I always had soft spot for Tyrone as I used to play it maybe once a month in season.  I can't really remember the course...its been sooooo long.

Valdres (9 hole)
Bro Hof Slott Castle
Falsterbo
Mossy Oak
Wine Valley

Honorable mention

Gearhart Golf Links

I'd like to hear more about Lofoten. As a Norwegian I am intrigued. I have wanted to go Lofoten for a long time anyway. The area looks stunning. With golf I have to be certain I get there now. What is the experience like?

Check out Darius Oliver’s write up on Lofoten. I pretty much agree with his comments and he says it much better than I could.

https://www.planetgolf.com/courses/norway/lofoten-links-golf-club

Lofoten Island is definitely an amazing place to visit even without golf. With summer making golf possible 24 hours a day, it’s for sure a unique experience.

Hoping to get to Lofoten Links this summer on my first every trip to see my Norwegian heritage first hand.  Planning to spend several days up there sightseeing as well, but Lofoten Links is definitely on the itinerary.  You are the first person I know who has actually played it.

Played about 40 courses this year.  Excluding my home club, these were probably my favourites:

Royal Melbourne (West)
The Country Club
Tara Iti
Royal Melbourne (East)
Kinloch (NZ)
Victoria (Australia)
Predator Ridge (Ridge)
Commonwealth
Royal Ottawa
Titirangi

Honourable Mention to Ekwanok, where I only made it to the 7th hole before a monsoon swept in over the mountain.  From what I could see of the rest of the course it probably would have cracked the list had I been able to play it!

Doug-If you get a chance go back to Ekwanok. A great piece of land with the Green and Taconic mountains as a backdrop. Travis delivers a special set of greens as usual and I can’t think of anything in Vermont that is in the same class.
