Dr. Joseph Bausch, white courtesy phone please....

Here's a hint...the first nine holes were laid out by a guy with a nickname of "Pipe", circa 1924.

Dr. Bausch who did the original research will fill in the rest shortly I'd imagine.

The first nine holes at Carlisle were designed by English architect W. H. "Pipes" Follett in the mid-20s.  Later another nine was added and I believe it was designed by Philly area archie Jock MacKenzie.

Jim,

I haven't played it but know that Joe & Matt Frey have.   

There aren't a lot of options in that immediate area for private clubs and most are either closer to  York & Lancaster and a few near Harrisburg.   I would think travel time and location would be factors in your friend's decision.

I really enjoyed my round there.  The property starts out a bit flat, but then later in the round gets into some very nice terrain.  The conditioning was very good.  Of course I will whine a bit about the trees as a few could go IMHO.  ;)

We spoke with the pro a bit and he is running a good program there.

Jim,

One place your friend may also want to consider looking into is West Shore Country Club near Camp Hill.

It was originally designed by George Morris (of the Old Tom Morris family), had a lot of expansion and loving care from a guy named Ed Tabor over a couple of decades, and got the usual sprucing up from Gil Hanse and Jim Wagner in 2003 or so.

A group of us from here played out there in an outing a few years back and the general sentiment was quite positive, a bit of the "hidden gem" vibe permeates.

Carlisle is a kind of funky Course with some parts that I really like and others that don't do much for me. I've never scored well when playing there and it's one of those courses that I'm never really sure why that's the case. Thinking of it again I should make my way out there soon as it's a good day out.


West Shore is certainly a step up compared to Carlisle as far as the course and clubhouse are concerned. The food service and pro shop staff are both top notch and the course is quite good with a good number of high points. A good amount of quality golf in the area with Harrisburg CC and the two Hershey courses on the East Shore and CC York going south.


I would certainly rather be at West Shore if the drive is equivalent. But would have no issues with Carlisle if it was the more convenient club. I'm saying this with little to no knowledge of their respective cultures.

Lived in the Harrisburg area back in the 70’s and 80’s and have kept in touch with a few friends since. Never played West Shore, Carlisle or Harrisburg CC. That being said, Harrisburg is barely hanging on, bankrolled by a few wealthy members. It is fairly short and seemingly built on the side of a mountain.  Carlisle to me, from what i recall seeing of it, has too damned many trees. West Shore has always been the premier club in the area. Seeing that Blue Ridge is now closed and Colonial has been public for a decade,West Shore should be the last man standing, so to speak, in the area. York CC is an old Ross and I have heard good things about it,again, have not played it.
