Ballyneal

Last week I had the pleasure of traveling out to Ballyneal to play for a couple days. I actually did a Doak tour of Colorado with my brother that began at Commonground then lead us east to the chop hills. I have to say that what I experienced at Ballyneal was on of the greatest two days of my golfing life. I have never seen a course with such dramatic landscapes put to such good use. I found the routing to be absolutely mesmerizing. Ballyneal may be the perfect example of why Tom says not to look at photos before playing somewhere. There is no photo that can accurately depict the scale of the dunes and ways in which the ground moves there. There are endless possibilities for how to play the course depending on teeing ground, wind, and pin placements. I found the golf there to be exhilarating. It may be the best match play course I've ever come across.


The 16th hole may be my new favorite hole I've ever played. What a sense of place it has.



The new Mulligan short course is absolutely on par with the big course. It features wildly imaginative green complexes that make for a hell of a fun round of golf with only a few clubs in tow.


In all my brother and I went for 75 holes of Tom Doak golf in 3 days. Ballyneal is world class and I also highly recommend Commonground. We never kept score across the trip and had the time of our lives. Our matches were all thrilling and the golf was amazing.  Thanks Tom for providing such a special place for golf to be played. I'll never forget it.

Your post made my day. I am sad that I missed you by a day out there, but I have to agree with everything you said. The two courses are in near perfect condition, and the fun factor is at an all time high. Friendly, welcoming staff and a wonderful group of members adds to the unique vibe. I am so glad you had such a great time! It is a blessing every time I get to be out there.

I also happened to spend a few days at Ballyneal a week and a half ago. It’s no understatement to say that the golf courses were in perfect condition - I don’t know that I’ve ever played a firmer, faster golf course. The place is just as fun as it gets.

So much good there - the land, the spirit and essence of the game, the talent and care of Tom and his team, the superintendent's commitment and professionalism, the members' love of golf as it's meant to be played (and supported), and Jon's wonderful eye and skill with a camera: and thousands of miles away, I can sit here and take it all in, happy that such a good and great thing exists.
