Evolution of SCOREGolf rankings from 2000-2018
« on: July 26, 2018, 09:00:34 PM »
Below are the top 30 courses in the SCORE 2000 rankings and their evolution over time.

Some of the courses that were highly thought of at that time have fallen way down or completely off of the list.  The most notable of these are Glen Abbey, Nicklaus North, Crowbush, King Valley, Angus Glen, Deerhurst, Fairview Mountain and Lake Joe.  Note that in 2000 Banff was not in the top 30 - it was down at 45, and Jasper was way down at 21.

Very interesting, Wayne.

If my memory's correct, most of the other rankings have maintained a pretty consistent top-10 over the past decade and more. The dive so many notable courses have taken on the SCOREGolf ranking is remarkable; along with the jump courses like Jasper, Banff and Devil's Paintbrush have made. Jasper's is most impressive.

It is remarkable that some courses have been very stable despite the fact that they aren't in the top 10.  For example, Toronto GC has almost always been in the teens and Royal Colwood and Victoria GC have almost always been around 25.

I think there has also been the Canadian Open effect - the Abbey and Angus Glen were very highly ranked due to holding the Cdn Open.  Now that the rankers have become more sophisticated I think they can now see that hosting the PGA tour does not make a golf course great.  A similar effect probably helped Royal Montreal, although I haven't played it so I can't comment on where it belongs in the rankings.

Also, the renovation of Royal Montreal probably turned off some of its former fans, as even the holes they liked best from past Canadian Opens were changed.
