Narooma: fun, seaside Oz golf
« on: June 07, 2018, 07:08:17 AM »
Next up on the Ozdessey, a hidden gem. We spent a week driving between Melbourne and Sydney, enjoying stops along the way in small towns on the coast.
We found some accoms in a golf lodge in Narooma online. We had no idea of the course, the town or the rooms. As it turned out, they were all rather delightful.
First view of the course is promising with the sea immediately adjacent:

Hard to beat rolling coastal terrain with lovely views. Opening five or six holes play on clifftop setting with some nice changes of elevation.

I particularly liked this down-and-up dogleg-left par 4.

My Dear Marty,

But one of the wonderful, unheralded golf courses along this stretch of road to Sydney town!

My personal favourite is the wee nine-hole where you can smell, hear and, on a couple of holes, see the ocean at Mollymook. Lovely undulations, great sandy base, excellent greens and very few players! Absolutely delightful.

In fact one balmy evening, many moons ago, I was playing down the third hole (I think) and spotted a gleaming white golf ball all on its lonesome in the middle of the fairway. Caught between the devil and the deep blue sea, as far as being a canny Scot and or acceding to golf etiquette never to pick up somebody else's stray ball, I foolishly succumbed to the former. Well much to my surprise upon bending over to pop the ba' in my pocket it jerked away like a startled bird(ie)! At the same time there were hoots of laughter to my right and three wee urchins reeled their taunting ball back into the bushes fifty metres away where they were hiding!
Tae say the least I wiz mildly embarrassed but I'm never likely to cross paths with those scallywags ever again so I can rest in peace!

And, talking about resting in peace, just down the road there is a little cemetery where I would happily be buried as it has views over this delightful golf course and the clear, sparkling Tasman Sea. Happy days!

Cheers Col

Marty,

That course looks SandPiper'ish based on those handful of photos.  Either way, what a pleasant surprise!!

And then, just when you think it can't get any better, here comes the Hogan connection! Exciting for the travelling golfer....oh, wait a moment. This isn't Ben, it's bloody Paul!!! That's not a knife, this is a knife... ;D
Apparently he shot a beer commercial here sometime back. Doesn't hurt what is still a cracking wee par three across a chasm:
The White River runs dark through the heart of the Town,
Washed the people coal-black from the hole in the ground.

Loved this hole signage. That's an advert for where we stayed. The Lodge, NOT the Funeral Chapel

We then move inland a bit and begin to play a number of holes through native woodland. Very attractive, full of fabulous birdlife, a nice nature walk.

A wee bit of Pine Valley down under! Great little par 3 which reminded me of one of the Threes at The Dukes:

And another reminiscent of PV. Loved this penal carry to a diagonal fairway:

A couple more holes through the woods and we come back to the sea to finish:

Fun, interesting golf on a small-town unheralded golf course. We need to do way much more of this sort of thing!
Next up - NEW SOUTH WALES, baby!
Cheers,
F.

I've never played there but Bruce Grant built most of the bunkers up there. The greens too I think.

Have you ever played PV btw ?  ;D

Agree that the par 3 is reminiscent of the one at the Dukes. I wonder if Peter Thomson has ever played this course ?

Thanks for sharing Marty. As in other parts of the world, there's lots of more than acceptable golf away from the 'usual suspect' big names.
