New Golfweek rankings
« on: April 11, 2018, 11:45:39 AM »
All,

The new Golfweek Top 100 Classic and Modern are in the April 2018 issue.

The lists have not yet, however, appeared on the website.

If you a subscriber, the issue is available through the Golfweek app. I would guess it will end up in mailboxes and on the site soon.

Having been fortunate enough to play both the Upper and Lower at Baltusrol, why is the Lower ranked better than the Upper? I've always found the Upper more enjoyable, and architecturally more diverse, than the Lower.

Because it hosts major championships.

Hmm, I’m guessing Wolf Run in its current state is not the 72nd best modern course in the country. My buddy whose a (former and current) member is sitting here at work getting a kick that it’s ranked ahead of Crooked Stick.

I know there's no accounting for personal taste or for opinions gleaned solely from photos and write-ups, but while The Loop comes in at #69 I'd rather play *it* than all but 3 courses on the top 100 modern list

I will go one better, only two courses on the modern list strike me as more appealing than The Loop from the outside looking in....which are they?

Oh, that's interesting and gratifying to me, Sean - for two reasons:
1 - because I value and appreciate your tastes & opinions, and
2 - because of my own limited experience with gca I'd assumed that my choice (for everybody else) crossed the line between the quixotic and the absurd.
In truth, I had to stretch to get to 3 courses: I had Ballyneal and Bandon Trails ahead of The Loop, but then added in Kingsley.
I am very curious about your two. Please share
Peter

I am a fan of Whitinsville but think it's much better suited closer to 100 than 70. When it bests courses like Sankaty Head, Augusta CC, Fenway, Wipporwill and Creek just to name five that come after it I call foul. I think 1 and 9 are standout holes and what lies in between are fun but not in the category of other Ross neighbors that start with W such as Wocester and Winchester which don't even make the list. There must have been a lot of visits by panelists since last year.

I thought we might be talking about two of the same courses, but one ain't far off.  I am afraid I have gone Doak crazy....Ballyneal and Old Mac. Truth be told I have a far better chance of seeing Kingsley than my choices.  If I thought Apache Stronghold was in the type of nick worth travelling to see it would probably replace Old Mac.

Thanks, S.
Fascinating that, from the outside looking in, you there and me here could land on the same spot(s):
for me, Ballyneal and the Loop were the only two definite ones....but I was too embarrassed even to to *think* 3 Doaks in a row and pick Old Mac (though I've been very intrigued by the notion of "re-imagined foundational archetypes"), and so I picked instead the C&C that has long appealed to me most because of the more 'confined spaces', Trails, and then a rocky, big-boned and hearty alternative in Kingsley.

Jeepers...I lie...there is a 3rd course and it is a C&C (!)...though I would go with Friars Head. For some reason I often forget that Friars Head is modern...strange that.

Glad to see Cedar Rapids make the list based on the passion for the course of many posters. Surprised Davenport C.C. didn’t show up though.

Happy to see Ballyneal where it is, but I'm a bit of a homer.

Is Prairie Club Dunes not on the modern list? I honestly think it might be the most underappreciated golf course in NA. Sad really.

Bluejack Nat’l getting a good opening ranking.  Too bad Black Mesa isn’t in good enough shape to be in the top 100.  Both Cabot courses too new to rate?  How high will SS Black go?  There are two new ultra- privates being built in GA/SC opening soon that reportedly will be solid.

Matt - I don't think The Donald has yet annexed Cape Breton Island  8) ;)  although he might like to if he could get playing privileges at those two courses ;D
