Venue for 150th Open announced
« on: February 12, 2018, 09:56:46 AM »
This will surprise you. And the venue for the 150th Open is……………………….St Andrews !!

God, they don’t half flog the old lady to death. Does anyone else think that it would be better to give it a break now and again to not only help retain some of its mystique/prestige but also to give some new venues a go ?

Its all about the money, money, money. If they took it to say Burnham and Berrow the infrastucture does not fit for the required usage/money.

TOC (as you know) has been on a 5 year rota, just slightly altered for this the 150th. If they went every 10th year it would give others a bit more perhaps but with (I think) 10 courses now on the rota I guess that's enough. I quite like it more frequent there as a personal choice.
A combination of whats good for golf and good for turf.
The Players Club, Cumberwell Park, The Kendleshire, Oake Manor, Dainton Park, Forest Hills, Erlestoke, St Cleres.

What might be interesting is whether they go back to the 0’s and 5’s after 2021, making it just a four-year gap for the first return.
OR
Do they use the hiatus as a way of starting a new rota.
We’ll see...

I contemplated/advocated many years ago that US/UK opens should play only at TOC and Pebble Beach.  I was wrong.  The former is too easy for the pros and the latter too bling for the snowflakes.

I'd love to see how the pros handled Myopia and Silloth under Grand Slam conditions.  In my dreams...............

Composite course at St Andrews please. Start and finish on TOC and use as many of the best holes on the New, Eden and Jubilee as a reasonable routing permits.

As I move into my later 50s I want the Open at the Old Course every five years. It becomes a marker of time and the Open is special at St. Andrews.

Can't say I'm against it as year landmark tournaments are to be remembered, so why not have the most famous course hosting it?  Similar to what he USGA did in moving Pebble Beach off of it's traditional 10 year rotation to host the 2000 US Open 2 years ahead of schedule.

Si...and despite low scores TOC remains the most entertaining Open venue for the tv viewer...anything can happen on the front nine leading to the Loop. Plus, where else do we see players engaging with such seemingly minor slopes and contours?  With the exception of Sandwich, all the other venues, much like the case with the US Open, play very similar.

I quite like it at TOC every five years. I think the venue is special enough to warrant it.

Not trying to offend anyone and perhaps this wii: The Old Course and The Bible have a lot in common. With a heavy respect for both, it doesn't matter where they are ranked. They may both be hard to fully grasp. The Old Course is different and timeless and worthy and if we decide it is not we are the losers.

Maybe they should play it in reverse to spice things up a bit.
