Saturday in the Park with Robert Adam
« on: February 08, 2018, 02:23:47 PM »
In reading How the Scots Invented the Modern World (highly recommended) I ran across this account of the great Scottish architect  Robert Adams in London circa 1764:  "He owned a splendid house off St. James' Park, where he entertained friends such as the famous actor David Garrick and visitors such as David Hume and James Boswell, and played golf in the park."

Any idea where he would have played, or did he more likely just bat the ball around in a city park?

I suspect this is probably St James’s Park in LONDON, where the Adams were living and Practicing by that time.

Cheers,
F.

PS Of Course, we DID invent the modern world though! 8)

Thanks Martin.  I had in fact corrected my post to London where Adams practiced before returning to Edinburgh.  Could there have been a rudimentary course in the park?  Or did early golfers in the cities play a backyard game?

As a good Fife laddie, and, given his clientele, I’d guess there’s a fair chance he, his dad and his older brother might well have been R&A members.
Royal Blackheath might be a good bet for a London membership for them too...

Mike,

I suspect he/they did whatever they fancied before all the rules and regulations we have today in modern parks.

P.S.  Even growing up I remember guys coming over to the school yard to practice wedges and short irons and the like and taking divots out of the grass...

He designed the Pulteney Bridge in Bath, a true landmark.
