Thanks, David.
Nice to know you can still build an exclusive golf course on only 225 acres....
But "Originally thought to be Tom Doak's project to lose..." Really? Who thought that - I mean beyond Josh S, filtered through Geoff's perspective?
See, I'd heard it was originally Tom Fazio's to lose; and then of course many people originally thought it was Gil's to lose.
In any event, the inside scoop apparently isn't what it used to be...

The only reason I was in the running for the job was that I knew a developer down there who was going to do the deal with Michael, and the developer had recommended me to him.  But, back a couple of years ago when the project got into the press, the seller changed his terms substantially by asking for all cash for the land, and my developer friends backed away ... so I lost out.

This is one reason I don't like to discuss projects here before they are all signed off on and permitted.

I suppose Michael Jordan could have insisted on working with me when the developer of the Medalist got involved and told Michael he'd participate in the deal, but Bobby Weed [who was the superintendent at Long Cove when I first started in the golf construction business as a laborer] had just re-done the Medalist, so he was strongly recommended for the job.  And I wish him great success with it.

I did get to spend a couple of hours one day discussing golf course design with Michael Jordan.  [And, as Peter termed it in a different thread, "you can't take that away from me."]  That was fun.  He was very interested in the subject, in particular about the strengths of his game where he felt he could compete with the pros, vs. the areas where they're just better, and how to design for different abilities.  I'm guessing Bobby will get a lot of help and feedback out there.

Tom Doak,

At that point, had Michael Jordan played any of your golf courses?

I bet it's welcome news for members of other golf courses in the Jupiter/Hobe Sound area.
Now all the XXXX-XXXXers have a place to go play by themselves and take their 6-somes in carts with cigars and attitudes and have at it...;-)

What's the name for courses like this again...come on, please help me...;-)....a what trap...?...a what magnet...?...I forget.... ;D

Anything involving MJ I am excited to hear about.  At one point he was going to build his own course in Chicago, then it was Charlotte, and now Florida I guess.  He loves to play fast, just like Mike Ditka who plays 18 in 2-2 1/2 hours regularly.

David,

Looking forward to seeing what Bobby Weed is doing in south Florida.  Bobby says he is living on site, I know that some of the best golf course are built with properly staffed golf people spending the right amount of time on site.

Bobby is making that commitment.

My recent visit to Winter Park 9 confirmed my suspicions, energetic people on site, passion, talent = success.

The crew of Riley Johns and Keith Rhebb and staff nailed it there.  Well done.
