Short game practice area at PVGC
« on: October 13, 2003, 09:27:31 AM »
Who designed it and is there a better one anywhere?  Amazing green and bunker complexes with a ton of real estate.  You can hit 100yd wedges, long bunker shots, lobs, flips, punches, runners--everything and not get in anyone's way.  It is a great addition to the already fantastic range.  You could literally practice all day.

The new practice area and short game area on the south end was the inspiration of PV President Gordon Brewer and Tom Fazio designed it. It really is something special!

I might be wrong, but I was always under the impression that Ernie Ramsome was the co-designer along with Fazio.

Take a look at the coffee table book, Fazio Designs.  There's a great section of the book that talks about the concept and construction of the short course.  Co-designer was Ransome.  Fazio calls it "The Ransome Course." There's even a chart that compares the yardages and elevation changes between the short course holes and the "big course" holes whose shots are simulated on the short one.  There are a couple of holes that are not modeled after big course holes, as well.

bill_k & Scratch:

Short game practice area referred to in thread (Brewer/Fazio) is not the same as 10 hole Short Course (Fazio/Ransome).

Both are fabulous although the Short Course is in a class by itself IMO.

Scratch/Chipoat-I am talking about the practice area, not the short course, which is also another amazing part of the PV experience.

btw, I still think Mucci's off base on his belief that #5 is not a severe green....Rell had his putt just off the front roll back to him twice to a mid right pin!!

Could you cite where I said that # 5 green isn't severe ?

Are you sure that the discussion wasn't obout the 4th green ?

And are you sure that another discussion didn't differentiate between contouring and slope ?

The short game practice area is definitely SWEET!!!  I putted on three different practice greens, the green by the back range, then the one by short game practice area, and finally by the 1st tee, and then to the course.  All four of were of different speeds.  I was guessing my lag putts all day.

I rimmed the hole at #3...a front left flag position!  What a story that would have been.  My first hole in one ever and at PVGC on my virgin tour of the course!  It was one of those shots that lands and then takes the break and slowly feeds toward the hole...two putt par.

Rellio neglects to inform everyone that it was a two putt par from 2.5ft ;)

Patrick:

I can't point to the exact thread, and I don't remember whether slope or contour was exactly your point, BUT.....

I DO recall that you made some comment on here within the last 2 months that the 5th green at Pine Valley was not particularly severe (in whatever context you meant) AND....

I DO recall that I questioned your opinion on that matter in a post on that same thread.

I concede that the 5th green is not severely contoured BUT...

You definitely left the impression in my mind on your post that you were referring more to slope/speed of putts/amount of break, etc.

Perhaps I didn't read your post closely enough.

At any rate, those are both THE FACTS as I remember them and my interpretation of same at that time.

The short course was a collaboration between Fazio and ErnieR and that was, whatever, 12 or so years ago. Ernie's retired now from running PVGC and Gordon Brewer has been the new president for the last number of years and it was his inspiration for the new really fantastic south range that Tom Fazion did. There's all kinds of good stuff going on at the new south range, even an interesting bunker way over on the right to hit out of that most may not have even noticed. The small putting green directly behind the right side of the new range is probably the quickest and truest green at PVGC! And the pitching area on the right side of the road to the new south range is terrific too.

Patrick--I thin kthe PV #5 comments were posted in a thread about Baltusrol that went off topic to conversations about PV greens....I remember some disagreement about #4 as well.

Pat & Chip:

The front right slope on #5 is really severe--and with the pin on that right basic little "ledge" about 5-7 steps into the green needs to be carried over or the ball will come back into the fairway. If you're on the fairway below that particular right frontish pin position there're two ways to play that shot--first to just get it over the slope to the pin or actually hit the shot above that pin up the slope behind it and the ball will filter back down to the pin. That front right slope was softened somewhat in-house some years ago as it used to be even more severe than now.
