Yesterday was a beautiful summer day here in Sydney — 33C (96 Fahrenheit) and a warm northerly blowing.

What better way to spend such a day than head to the beach — and where better to set up camp than on a direct line between tee and green on the 6th at New South Wales GC!!

If you look closely, there’s also a couple relaxing on the rocks about half-way across the carry. They almost wore my Chrome Soft after the potential loss of life got to me at transition and I hit it about three inches fat.

Scott,

The new Titiest AVX is just as soft as the Chrome and guaranteed not to stray off line.

Got to hand it to that couple they picked one of the best spots in the world; you’ve just finished the All World 5th, you’re about to cross Botany Bay on 6 and you get the chance to be degreened on 7!

Number seven at Musgrove Mill is a par three that crosses a bend in the Enoree River. My guest in the Member/Guest saw a couple in a canoe just short and right of the 185 yard hole. He calmly asked them to move because they were in his landing area. Sure enough they moved and true to his word hit it to the spot they evacuated.

One day at Pebble Beach there was a naked guy on the beach way down below the cliff on 8 and a lady yelled up for us to call the police.

When our group played the 6th at Pennard, we played over a couple who was lost in a moment of intimacy. They never lost focus-completely oblivious to our presence, though I must say one of our group did.....and nearly killed them-what a way to go...

Scott,

Is that a common occurrence there? I've never heard anyone speak of it before and the only time I've been there was a perfect day with no-one except us and the waves to be found.

Indeed that changes the shot with these guys just living life on the edge in the target line. Are they just ignorant or doing that out of some kind of protest?

Oh what I wouldn't give for 33 degrees and firm brown conditions right about now, especially after two flight cancellations due to snow today trying to get to Munich.

Watched a golf ball shatter the rear window glass of a car last year. The type of car was, ironically, a VW Golf! A playing partner remarked that the player concerned would need more than a pitch mark tool to affix a repair.

One time while playing with my brother I saw him toe it out of a fairway bunker and fly right into a woman's dog walking with her owner down the road adjacent.

;D  Blowing 35km/h, it's probably where we belonged.

David Davis,

Never seen it happen before, and given they're recessed a bit below the edge of the tee, maybe they thought that was fine, or maybe they didn't realise the tee was there and playing directly over them.

As Sydney gets even busier and the main beaches get more packed, we will probably see more people making use of Cape Banks for recreation. Just something to be managed, I guess.

The busyness of the coastal walking path has already led the local council to direct the club to move the 6th green further from the path, which is fine by the golfers because it will put the green even closer to the ocean and give the new architect - name to be announced in the next month or two, we're told - a good chance to build something straight away that will show just what might be achieved elsewhere on the course where room for improvement exists.

Second hand story...but: friend was at Pebble Beach and a playing companion aced #7. Highlight all time moment. Stood over the tee shot on 8 and sliced one into the windshield of an oncoming car. Talk about highs and lows!

I worked at the local country club in high school and late one evening a few of us decided to head to the first tee for a quick 9. One was my best friend who was just taking up the game. He was obviously nervous and wanted to get out of the glare of the clubhouse. As a lefty, he took a mighty swipe, which made a B-line directly to the RIGHT (not left!), where it bounded on, only to hit the then club champion straight on his ass. He did not look happy until he saw it was us, and just laughed it off. I was in tears as I picked myself off the ground. That shot defied logic.

The most perilous tee shot I can think of is on the 17th at Alwoodley where you play from a tee in the trees over a minor road onto the fairway. Yes, it is a minor road but it is a public road. You can't see the traffic until it is there, and you just have to hit and hope. I believe someone hit a police car some years ago but no action was taken. But what if it was a woman taking her children to school?

Many years ago, when the practice ground (they call it practice course) was on the other side of the course beside the 18th hole, a lady visitor who was playing in some prestigious ladies' championship sliced her ball out of bounds in practice, smashing the windscreen of an Alwoodley member driving down to watch the golf. The outcome was that they got married. Sadly, the marriage didn't last.

Matt,

I'm intrigued with this story...given there isn't an actual road within 1/2 mile of the 8th tee box at Pebble.

Unless you meant he broke the windshield of a golf cart...  ;)

Cal,

Which end of the dog did the ball go into?

Kalen - sadly I’ve never been to PB and wasn’t sure if there was a road on the left side of 8...perhaps it was a different par 3...the story teller was fairly convincing and was in the foursome.  Or, it could have been a helluva hook - fast and firm?  #rollbacktheball

Can’t somehow imagine that these days you’d be okay to build a hole where you hit over the corner of a hotel to a green a couple of feet from a public road, but we still play a hole like this that’s been there a while.
The former location of the course I play most often crossed public roads nine times in 9-holes and a later version had a hole that played directly over a mainline railway and another hole that played blind over a raised public road embankment to a green located between two mainline railway lines. Fun times, although the population was half what it is now back in those days and initially at least golf balls did have feathers inside them.

Playing over and between two railway lines and blind over a roadway embankment. Photos/map are from the old course on Malvern common, aka The Worcestershire GC, circa 1905.

Did she ask for her ball back ?

Crossland Heath has a hole (3rd) where you hit over a house if cutting the corner. Halifax, West End has the carpark in play on both the 17th and 18th where I once smashed the windscreen and rear window on the same car (oops). In Switzerland Zumikon just outside Zurick has an opening tee shot over a main road. Prestwick's opener must be up there with the railway station but the already mentioned 17th at TOC has to be the most dodgy.
