The remaining first round tie is schedule for early this Friday afternoon at East Renfrewshire GC; a sporty looking moorland course attributed to Braid.

Josie Goodale and Niall Carlton complete the four-ball.

I look forward to reading thoughts on East Ren. It’s been on my list of courses I want to visit for some time. My aim is to definitely get there this summer.

Michael

I'm sure we could manage a 5-some tomorrow or at least a 2 and 3 ball.  Clyde will finish me off for a dog license and I'll be happy to dump my clubs and walk with the remaining 4 and/or wait for you in the bar.

I played there back in '89 and was impressed with the course. Quite tricky in places with some very interesting opening holes. Good luck to the both of you and looking forward to seeing who I will meet in the next round.

Rich,

Thanks for the offer. I'm playing at Mortonhall tomorrow morning so will unfortunately have to pass but I look forward to hearing about the course. Hopefully jet-lag won't play a deciding factor in the match.

The sight of the 220 yard par-3 11th was enough to convince Rich into a concession at 6-down...

...though Jet Lag and a course way sportier than I imagined offered him no earlier favours. (A hole reminiscent of the approach to 10 at Pine Hills CC in Sheboygan, WI for those familiar.)

Only 6121 yards long, Braid's untouched East Renfrewshire lets the terrain do the talking. The more I see of Braid, the more I am convinced there was no one more adept at tackling wild terrain! For that matter, the more of inland golf I see in Scotland the more I am impressed of its quality, at a mid-range level at least.

Springy moorland, with most green sites sat on or manipulated out of rises, East Ren is undoubtedly one for summer; a good job it hasn't rained in Scotland for over a month (or so it seems.)

There are plenty of fine holes - especially the stretch from six though thirteen - with only the final pair a let down.

#2; 342 yards, par-4 - Traverses a beautifully winding creek.

#6;  350 yards, par-4 - Drives downhill towards the loch which seems deceptively within range; only a shot finishing on this tiny pimple will offer a view and angle to the green tucked ninety-degrees left on the back of the hillside.

#8; 490 yards, par-5 - A rollocking five that finishes just over a final fold.

#9; 321 yards, par-4 - About ten yards left of the boundary will leave a pitch to the tiny, well bunkered green.

#12; 350 yards, par-4 - 'Alps'-like, this up-hiller is one for the template lovers, or those that just love adventurous golf! Sweeping right, only a drive on the far outside line will offer a glimpse of the flat.

#13; 124 yards, par-3 - Ridge-to-ridge, this wee cutie is best missed short.

Though the over-zealous 1970s tree planting program didn't affect our relatively straight driving, it will temper some cool visual deception, and beautiful views over surrounding moorland, Glasgow and the Trossachs.

Highly recommended at a 100 quid for the four-ball!!

Well done Clyde, and commiseration to Rich although travelling directly to the golf course straight off a trans Atlantic flight probably wasn't the best preparation but it was a pleasure to join you and Josie and Clyde.

I've played East Ren a number of times over the years and knew it was a good course but that was probably the best I've seen it. It's also one of those courses that when you go back to play it after a period of a few years is if anything better than you remember it. As Clyde says, some cracking terrain and Braid certainly made the most of it.

Sam Krume and I played a rather baked Gog Magog Old Course today with a gentle breeze. The greens were challenging and at the right speed with the grass being a bit longer to protect the greens from the dry spell we are having in the UK.

The match was closely fought and I won 2/1 aided by having 2 shots which is a rarity for me.

Look forward to playing with Sam again next time.

Congratulations Ben and commiserations Sam.

Ben and I have already agreed to play our match at Cavendish. I'm playing there on Friday in a MacKenzie Society match and have been warned that the greens are stimping at 11! Those are some tricky greens at the best of times!

However, if we can wangle the JCB course that would make a great venue.   8)

Did I hear correctly that the final will be 36 holes over The Kings and Queens courses at Gleneagles. Last year’s champion gets to play along and be match ref.  (S)He will then present the handsome trophy over dinner that evening.  In order to allow for the possibility of a 36 hole tie, it will necessitate a two night stay. All to be paid for by the Inventor of the competition?

I'm all in, Tony, if last year's champion will split the bill the the Inventor.  See you there and then!

Just an idea - how about having the semi finals, final and 3rd/4th place playoff at one venue at a similar time?

Great idea, Ben, particularly since it is very unlikely that I will ever get to the semis given that I am doomed to play Clyde J. on days one when I am arriving in the UK from trans-atlantic red-eyes :( .

Maybe some day I'll get a bye...... :o

Well well we will have to see

The first golf course that came to mind was Aberdovey as the rail station, clubhouse and dormy house are really close together plus a great matchplay course from what I have seen

On Open Championship Sunday, Colin and I battled it out at Colin's home course of Royal Aberdeen. While not the off-the-beaten-path sort of place that is in keeping with the spirit of the competition, we had logistics and calendars to coordinate, and a round across the Balgownie links was a fantastic venue for our tie.

Colin jumped out to a superb 4-up lead and shot a tidy number on the front 9, only to see his kindness as a host win out against his want to move forward in the competition. In the end, across the sun-soaked dunes north of Aberdeen, I managed to pip Colin 1-up in a very closely fought match.

It was a second time I had played the course, and found much to love about the two 9s. My favourite hole on the course likely remains number 9: a sweeping dogleg right up the hill with lots of movement and undulation!

I look forward to playing the winner of the Ian / Mark match and promise to go WAY off the beaten path for the next game as a penance. Colin, thank you so very much for a lovely day, and for your kindness.

Tim, you were more than welcome - and it was great to host you, thanks again for making the journey to come up, especially as you had to stand on the train for a considerable part of the journey due to the number of people heading out to Carnoustie.

We certainly got a great day for it 25°C and a very gentle breeze- although forgetting put sun cream on my arms was a mistake, and they are definitely a little red today! You played very steadily and aided by my sudden and inexplicable collapse from the 15th onwards were a deserved winner. Best of luck in the next round, and hopefully we'll catch up for a round again soon.
