Coyotes?
« on: November 27, 2017, 06:31:19 PM »
I just joined a course here in NE Florida which has a decent design, good maintenance, great greens and a very friendly clubhouse.  The only negative is the presence of coyotes.

Anybody know the phone number or URL of Acme Explosives?

Rich -

Coyotes are almost commonplace in the wilder parts of San Francisco these days. I have seen them on both the Presidio GC and the Olympic Club Ocean Course.

You can read all about them in any number of articles here:

We have a den of coyotes living in the woods between our 3rd and 4th holes.
Very common to see them in the mornings running across the fairways.

We also have a ton of deer.
About 5 years ago, a buddy of mine was playing a few holes with his 6 year old son. They saw a doe and its fawn on the side of the woods near the FW. Suddenly, two coyotes sprung out and took the fawn right in front of its mother and dragged it into the woods.

You can hear them howling sometimes at night.

Rich,

I would take coyotes all day in Florida compared to what else can lurk around there. It sure beats gators, water moccasins, panthers, bears, etc.

David,

I actually just saw a coyote on the 6th hole of the lake a few weeks ago.

And more information on the move to "NE Florida" is appreciated !!

Amelia Island is our NE Florida.  Josie and I are transitioning here for the winters and then Scotland for the summers.  It will take some time, but let me know when you might be nearby.

They seem to be all over the place these days.

At T&C, there used to be a family of foxes that lived in the ravine. They were pretty cute, weren't afraid of humans at all (one stole a putter cover of mine after I put my bag down next to the green to putt), and they did a terrific job of eating varmints like squirrels, rabbits, moles, etc.

One winter a coyote moved in from the nearby Mississippi River bluff and he killed the entire family of fox. I suppose the coyote also serves his purpose in the food chain, especially in Minnesota where deer and wild turkeys are abundant, but a fox is certainly a more handsome animal.

We just had a pack of four move into a strip of woods on the outskirts of my neighborhood. We've had a couple of cats and small dogs go missing, obviously that's one potential explanation. I've seen them sitting on the edge of the neighborhood's detention pond a few times. I don't think they're likely to mess with humans. Or at least I hope so, given that I walk my two 50 lb dogs at 6 AM and 9 PM...

Kyle, ever had a pet dog eaten alive?  They are vicious predators.

You shoot them at night by light - might not need a permit, just permission from the land owner. Turboe's correct as silencers are generally ok and might avoid backlash from the uninformed.

You guys clearly haven't seen the videos of wild hogs in Texas being killed by automatic weapons from helicopters.

Happy hunting.  Disclaimer: none of the Lord's defenseless animals was harmed by this post or poster.

You think coyotes are a problem? Try dealing with an elk herd like at Gearhart Golf Links and Highlands Golf Course on the Oregon Coast.

As for coyotes eating dogs, those little toy dogs people are partial to today deserve it.

We have coyotes in Cary, NC and they apparently have killed some pets.  We also have bald eagles living and nesting in the trees on the course and they can be pretty nasty as well. Little do they know that many of the members have weapon carry permits if golf clubs don't work. ;)

Niall, I assume your tongue was firmly in cheek re:  the fortnight of Summer in Scotland.  I'm betting on Global Warming to improve the golfing opportunities in the April-September period.  Let's hope we can get together in 2018 in one of those rare dreichless days.

We have coyotes up here at Scarboro Golf & Country Club in Toronto as well.  Although we don't seem to have them every year, and when the coyotes aren't around you certainly see more foxes.

Here in New England there are lots of Coyotes in the last ten years, which in this part of the US have bred with Canadian Wolves and the resulting species is sometimes known as a Coy Dog or Coy Wolf.  Here is an article about them:

http://www.pbs.org/wnet/nature/meet-the-coywolf-infographic-a-field-guide-to-the-coywolf-or-eastern-coyote/8663/

At our club in CT, we have trapped and relocated many of these in the past few years.   One was 80 pounds and quite nasty.  Apparently, some are more wolf, and some are more coyote, genetically.  Lots of torn up deer around in the spring, when they are feeding litters, and we have a pile of dog collars that we found by a den.  And lots of "missing dog" flyers on telephone poles.   We are careful with our pets at night in these parts......

We've had them along Cherry Creek, which flows through our course here in the center of Denver. They move up the creek from more rural areas. There used to be a den of foxes on the property but they seem to be gone. More recently, I understand the coyotes may have been "dispatched" by a helpful member.

No kidding!  Dye Preserve had a python last summer!  Walking alone in fla playing golf can be scary....

I grew up in New England, and 50 years ago there was very little wildlife except birds.   Now, with reforestation, there is a zoo out there.    Hawks, Eagles, Bear, Moose, Coyote, Bobcats, the occasional Mountain Lion.   The great thing about WALKING golf is the opportunity to see and hear all of it.   Its wonderful....unless you are a squirrel, you are hawk dinner.

Good to be heard from!!  Its been very busy lately and I dont get on here as often as I used to.  This thread got my attention as kid that grew up around coyotes in SD and have always enjoyed hunting them.

To answer your question, a suppressor is what the anti-gun crowd refers to as a silencer.  However contrary to what Hollywood would have you believe they don't actually silence a firearm like they do in the movies, they just help minimize some of the detonation noise at the muzzle. And are very useful for predator hunting, especially coyotes!
