Architect joke my Dad sent me (modified to be readable now)
« on: November 02, 2017, 11:42:04 AM »
My dad sends me email jokes fairly often, usually a few every week.  Well one from last week was right up the alley of this site:

"Sidney went to a career counselor to determine what field to enter.  After extensive testing, the counselor finally gave him the results."

"Well, Sid, you are a sadistic psychopath who enjoys inflicting pain, misery, and suffering on others."

"You'd be a terrific golf course designer."

I never have gotten this line of thinking.  [I blame Ben Hogan.]

Golf course architects are just the catalysts for you to inflict pain and suffering upon yourselves.  Or, pure joy, if you had a better attitude!

Ben Hogan was well after George Crump...who certainly came after a great number of people who thought various forms of difficulty and punishment were a key to great golf course design.

It seemed to work for Crump...

So when you go to Pine Valley, is it out of masochism, because you enjoy pain?

Or do you enjoy being one of the guys who's good enough to avoid the pain there?

I don't think there are many 25-handicappers who would want to play Pine Valley repeatedly so they could enjoy the pain.  That's not their niche.

I thought the punchline was going to be “a terrific drummer”.

And it never occurred to me that I could have more “joy” on the golf course with a better attitude. I thought I needed to break 70 first!

“Hurt me, hurt me, hurt me!” said the masochist.
“No!” said the sadist.

As a high capper, I agree with Tom in concept that we generally avoid repeat visits to courses that punish with impunity.
However, there's always an exception to every rule, and I suspect Pine Valley would certainly be on that short list...

P.S.  As long as we're telling bad golf jokes....

As a couple approaches the altar, the groom tells his wife-to-be, "Honey, I've got something to confess: I'm a golf nut, and every chance I get, I'll be playing golf!"

"Since we're being honest," replies the bride, "I have to tell you that I'm a hooker."

The groom replies, "That's okay, honey. You just need to learn to keep your head down and your left arm straight.”

Tom, as you just said, if that 25 handicapper goes to Pine Valley with a good attitude they will have one of the most enjoyable rounds of their lives.

My impression was that PV was specifically designed to be difficult because the New York golfers were always kicking the Philly golfer's asses.  The Philly guys deduced that the NY guys played tougher courses and were better players because it.  So, they set out to build something that would get them up to speed.

That would be correct, Dave, but I'd add Boston and Chicago to the list of ass-kickers.

Merion, Pine Valley, and Cobb's Creek were all built roughly the same time with that idea in mind....the creation of a challenging golf course that would help breed and develop better golfers in the Philadelphia region.

By primarily the same bunch of guys...

As I get older, and come to the realization that having fun is why I choose to play golf, I have come to think that the best courses are those with a low Slope rating, no matter what the Course Rating is.  As I think of the Slope rating in a short-hand form, I think that it measures how much more difficult (in a relative way) the course is for a high handicapper than a low handicapper.  Don't we want this to be low?  Although not exactly the same, shouldn't we prefer to play a hard par, easy bogey course?  Shouldn't golf as a game for most of us be fun, not punishing?

Golf suddenly needed to be easy when every fat white guy that still plays the game discovered how hard their life had become. Those of us who have great jobs, beautiful wives and successful children like a challenge now and then.

On a related note, the worst superintendent joke ever (among a limited field):

A few years ago, during the great recession, I heard one of my clients fired his superintendent to save money, and put the golf course dog in charge.  Concerned, I called the club to ask what the greens, tees and fairway looked like.

The answer....."Ruff." ;)

I didn’t have my glasses on when I first read the thread title, and wondered what a thread about artichokes was doing here.....
